So if I am reading this right. the Oilers are trading away our best dman. Elite PowerPlay quarterback, who is sub 25, a former top 10 overall pick....

For Matheson, Montembeault, a draft bust, and an unproven d prospect at least 3 years from having half the impact Bouch currently has?

Just doesn't make sense. Also doesn't really make sense for Van or MTL.

This doesn't work for MTL because they are trading their number 1 defenseman and goalie (who's contract they are currently trying to extend) for a late 1st (which is nice), a LHD prospect they don't even have space for (so not really appealing) and Beauvillier (an undersized pending UFA winger that they definitely don't need or want).

You’re seriously underestimating Matheson’s worth and vastly overestimating Bouchard’s.

Matheson has the same number of goals as Bouchard, nearly the same amount of shots, and the same amount of powerplay points. plays similar minutes as well. don't get me wrong, he is a downgrade, but not a huge downgrade.

in return, oilers add a quality starter for 500k cap hit, a 22 year old scoring at approx a p/g pace in the AHL (ignore podkolzin's draft position, evaluate him for what he is today and its a probable NHLer with middle 6 upside with team control) and the canucks top prospect.

beauvillier's 29 5v5 points last year would have been 2nd on the habs behind only suzuki. granted he has been snake bitten this year with a 5.41% shooting percentage and a 9.46% on-ice shooting percentage in all siuations. that's why i included a 4th to offset that.

meanwhile, montembeault and matheson, while good, aren't worth a ton on their own. matheson has almost a $5 million cap hit so nay trade involding him would require cap coming back. i think a 1st plus a B prospect is fair when you look at historical comparables on Dmen and Goalies. especially since the 1st has 0 protection

i like matheson. mobile, shoots a lot, and can QB a powerplay. but lets not pretend like he is a top Dman in the league. he would be 2nd best dmen at best on the oilers, maybe 3rd. the value here for edmonton is to use him as a stop gap PP QB for the remainder of the season and upgrade their goaltending and prospect pipeline.

The dont want him. They have 8 wingers signed past this year.

The habs dont need or want to trade matheson. He is the only letter wearer who speaks French. He is 16th among dmen in points and 8th in atoi. 2 1sts+ for the habs to consider.

Your offer isnt close
