3-Team Garland Trade

Description
To VAN
Sean Walker (75% retained by PHI & MTL)

To MTL
Conor Garland (1M retained by VAN)
2024 3rd round pick (VAN)

To PHI
Joel Armia
2024 2nd round pick (COL)
2025 2nd round pick (VAN)

My thoughts:
Vancouver adds a RHD defensemen who is on an expiring contract while also dumping Garland. They send a 2nd rounder to PHI for Walker.

Montreal is able to upgrade Armia for Garland (with retained salary) and downgrade on a pick in the 56-64 range for one in the 86-96 range. In addition they retain effectively 25% on Walker.

Philadelphia gets to utilize their available cap space and get 2nd rounder and a pick upgrade from the 86-96 range to the 56-64 range.

Might not be enough to go around but just picking some ranges here for what might make sense all around. Have seen some interest in VAN trying to get some RHD on these forums and thought this might benefit everyone. Cheers.

No from mtl on a few fronts.

They dont want to downgrade a pick to dump armia.

They dont want to retain on walker because then they cant retain on monahan who will be one of the most coveted tdl assets.

They dont want garland they already have too many undersized wingers

IDK, I just don't think that value wise you need the 2nd from COL in this trade. Mtl help by taking Garland, his value is more negative with 3years thand Armia's.

On the retain side, Monahan and Pearson are really cheap, at the TDL even without retaining, many team can afford their salary.

Mtl As too many undersized player, sure, but I can't imagine this would be Mtl only move of the season, and they are in transition so maybe they'll flip some again.

I do not totally agree with the value for Mtl if you give a 2nd, but if you adjust that I kinda like the idea of ths 3 way transaction.

Garland’s value is not more negative than Armia. Garland is actually a good player who is at most 500k overpaid. Armia is an AHL level player who’s 2.5m overpaid, and is also owed 8.6M in real money over this season and next season

I mean.. Garland is 12M$ in real money for the same time period of Armia's contract so pretty overpaid also, not just a 500k

I’m saying he’s 500k overpaid based on his cap hit. 4.45-4.95M for a good 2nd line winger is 2nd line money and a fair contract. 3.4M for an AHL level player is terrible

Taking on garland is a problem.

Its still almost 4 million for 3 years gor a guy who has 3 points, is undersized, is terrible on the pp (so doesnt even help that), doesnt kill penalties.

Its spending money farther put when we will need it more and he doesnt fill a role.

The total buyout for armia is 2.1 million which is almost 3 million less per year. They wpuld be better off buying him out and taking that extra 3 million onto an offer for a actual difference maker and not just another body like garland

I don't mind the parameter of this deal from a Canucks fan but the retention is an issue for Van.

Real money doesn't mean much of anything these days. There are few owners in the league who don't spend to the cap or dish out the $. Montreal is definitely not one to hold back.

Canucks would pass. garland isnt bad, and he doesnt get much pp time (and all their best players are on unit #1, 2nd unit is weak). They have plenty of expiring contracts after this season, so while he may be overpaid- its not a pressing concern.

Might be able to escape with retention on Monahan. But Pearson will be a nice double dip if they get another pick in a trade. Darn you, Hughes!

Thanks for all the feedback. Wasn't sure how to gauge Garland's value since he's still decent but in the limbo of being more of a luxury player at his cap hit but not being a surefire top-six player. Understand the points about not wanting to retain and Montreal wanting to save their last retained salary spot for one of their rentals. Probably overvalued the cap but wouldn't mind trying to trade Walker to VAN on his own for the 2025 2nd rounder.

You’re using an 11 game sample size to discredit Garland when he’s been a productive player for the last 4 seasons, especially 21/22 and 19/20. He would instantly become your second best winger behind Caufield

How about we offer Phil Di Giuseppe (4 points) straight up for Slafkovsky?

Tyler Myers has 5 points this season, so he must clearly be more valuable than Devon Toews who only has 4 points right?

Canucks decline. They won't retain and pay to dump Garland. They're most likely looking to move Garland for a RHD who also has an undesirable contract. Swapping out a position of strength (wing) for a position of need (defence). The team they deal with most likely falls on the other end of the spectrum with an excess of defensemen and a need on the wing.

Going back to the last 41 games hes played he only has 22 points so hes not exactly lighting the world on fire for a while now. Gallagher has 20 in his last 41 and he had a broken ankle for 20ish of those games and is trending up not down like garland. Mike hoffman had 23 in his last 41 for the habs and drouin had 24 and they got blasted into the sun.

We already have garland in harvey pinard we just arent paying him almost 5 million.

So a 44 point pace? Seems fine, not great, but fine. Also when you control for opportunity, it looks even better. He played only an average of 14.08 minutes during the time period you reference. That's good for 2.28 points per 60 he would be a very respectable 144th points per 60 among forwards. That's top 192 and definitionally in the top 6, although low end admittedly. So you're cherry-picked time period really doesn't prove your point.
