I don't care about his offensive deficiencies. I'm saying he isn't even good defensively. Benoit, Lagesson and Liligren have significantly better defensive metrics.
He's 62nd percentile defensively. On any random team he'd be their 3rd best defensive D. When he brings no offense that means that at best he's likely a #4D realistically he's a #5/6. At $6.5M for 7 more years on the wrong side of 30 nobody should want him without a significant sweetener.

Fair enough but I don't think any team offers this much without the retention.
Depending on who you ask it's 3-4 firsts worth of value.

The deal makes no sense for Dallas, even without the 1st?
Washington was gonzo when they made that deal…</div></div>
Liligren is worth a 1st and 3rd he's a #3 for the next 7 years for a team.
If you want to argue Hakanpaa's value that's fine or if you want to argue the fit with Dallas you can but Lili's value isn't really debatable. People were having these arguments a year ago and the Sandin trade shows that this is clearly the value of a young 2nd pairing D.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>I don't understand how none of you morons that believe these cards are the end all be all can comprehend that the Leafs are a good offensive team and the Blues are very much not so. Alot of that is weighted by offensive stats. That's not paraykos role. And the Blues have a pretty bad offense. And have for about 2-3 years. When miraculously the decline started happening.</div></div>
And what people like you don't understand is that analytics accounts for your competition and teammates.
Players analytics don't magically change when their team gets better/worse. They also don't change when they get traded.
They are measured against how your teammates perform when your on/off the ice.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tryger</b></div><div>LA doesn't have to move Kaliyev this TDL, he is an RFA and still would hold value. The Kings just changed their coach before the last game, you think he doesn't have any wish to see if Kaliyev better fits his system? If teams want to low ball to get Kaliyev I'd just rather LA waits, Lafreniere and Turcotte can be sent down to facilitate patience if needed. The point is, if there is no player that actually makes the Kings better, why not keep a player who has scored goals at the NHL level until the end of the season?</div></div>
Yea that's a pipe dream.
Heard from a friend who is a scout in Detroit that the offer the have on the table is Kayliev for Kostin +5th and Yzerman won't do it till the pick is removed. And Kostin is pretty much a cap dump.

Kypreos Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>-Rangers pass on this. I don't see them moving Kakko at the deadline, especially not for rentals. Doesn't make sense for a team with Cup aspirations to trade away NHL-level depth at the deadline.
-Flames pass. Chychrun is a tough comp because he had made it known he wanted out; Andersson has done no such thing to this point. Abruzzese and Timmins have minimal value; and while I think there's good value in Niemela/1st/2nd/3rd, I think you're not realizing that the Flames would need to be blown away by a deal to move Andersson, and this doesn't really hit that level.
-Wild pass. Maroon has won 3 rings and is swimming in playoff experience. Minnesota can do much better than swapping him for a fairly anonymous 13th forward.</div></div>
Appreciate the well thought through analysis here.
I think the Calgary trade is one they have to think on but I can see your reasoning on them passing. I agree with CJ who said on his podcast that he heard they were considering it cause they don't expect to be competitive before he's a UFA and this might be his max value.
For Rangers. I agree actually. I just think with the price of Cs being so high and Tarasenko pretty much being the only W who'd have more value that Bert on the market if the leafs sold him that this deal value wise is good for the Rangers. Now two weeks ago it seemed they were actively listening on Kakko and a few analysts put his value around a 2nd. I just think he's a bad player to move for the Rangers. Like Robertson has way more points in less games so that's the value you are looking at. I think for Toronto he's a good target since in the short term he can jump onto. Shutdown line and next year you could try him in the top 6.
McMann isn't an anonymous 13th forward. Few analysts said Edmonton offered more for him than Lafferty at the start of the season. That's part of the reason Toronto waited till in season to waive him. If you look at when he was waived, he was injured and no team had the cap or roster space without making a move to get him. They protected him. Maroon just was traded for a 7th. Not saying that is his value but he isn't fetching more than a 5th. McMann makes sense for Minnesota, he is someone they can resign and they need that depth next year with their cap situation. Again maybe he gets moved for a 5th/6th and same for Maroon. But I think the deal makes sense for a Wild team that isn't competitive this year but I'm not gonna argue over 5th-7th rounders lol. That's essentially a minor league deal.

On March 1st 2023, Ottawa was 6 points out of the play offs, and had to leap frog 3 teams. Quite a bit further back then where the leafs are now I'd say.</div></div>
I just checked. March 3rd, 2023 they were tied for 4th in the division. If Toronto loses tomorrow they will also be tied for 4th in the division.
The value in picks isn't much different.
Ottawa was going to get 12-16, Toronto will likely get 16-20.
That difference is more than made up for in the proposed trade.
Niemla is likely worth a 1st. He's a solid two way D with 25 points in 41 AHL games who captained Finland at the world juniors and projects as a top 4 guy. That's about the best you can hope for in a late 1st especially in this year's draft.
Then a 2nd, 3rd.
Abruzzese who is someone Calgary's top prospect has asked them to acquire per numerous reports.
Timmins still has some value as a longshot guy. At least as a 5/6 in the short term.
The package proposed is worth more than what Ottawa paid for Chychrun.
