Yep, nothing like acquiring a bottom pair Dman from a non playoff team to help any contenders defence. A massive overpay for less than mediocrity.

It does seem steep for Lauzon but l wouldn't mind his physical play on the bottom pairing. Leafs d will be fine during the regular season. The lack of clearing the net and making big hits is definitely an issue having to play teams in their division in the playoffs. Only McCabe makes other teams keep their head up.

It's too much for Lauzon, but if NSH was going to tie up it's last retention spot for multiple years, it would require an overpayment like this.

What does NSH having missed the playoffs last season have to do with anything? Should Vegas not have traded for Eichel, because the last time BUF made the playoffs Rob Ford was in office?

It has to with the Leafs and Preds exchanging two meh Dmen, and the Leafs giving up a first and third for the pleasure .

OK, that's not the argument you were attempting to make, when you were deriding Lauzon for being on a non playoff team.

However if you want me to entertain your new train of thought, you're comparing the wrong two players in this proposal. Timmins is an AHL/NHL tweener. Like McCarron, but McCarron has a more impressive body of work to date, and a cheaper contract. Lauzon is an NHL regular, who is being traded here with three years of max retention.

NSH is giving up the two best players in this trade, and taking on three years of undesirable retention. That's why TOR is adding picks. Like I said originally, the Leafs are giving up too much here, but for anything less than the 1st, it doesn't make sense for them.

The Marlies can keep Timmins, if that would make you happier. The Ads don't need him.

Who does Lauzon replace on the Leafs that makes them better? So it's a trade of 7th Dmen, and the Leafs give up a 1st and 3rd for the pleasure.

And now your issue is roster fit? Are you ever going to circle back and defend your previous arguments, or are you going to concede those points are weaker than the Leafs' last draft class?

Yes, Lauzon would replace Timmins, for one (we'll see how guys like Giordano and Klingberg hold up through the season). He's an upgrade over Timmins, and every team needs to dress their #7 at various points of the season. Especially a team like TOR, who has multiple older defensemen with a lot of miles on their odometers. Plus, with the double retention on Lauzon here, TOR actually has enough cap space to carry seven defensemen.

It's a lot to give up for an exchange of 7th Dmen. Gee, I wouldn't worry about Giordano holding up. He played 19 minutes a game last season, something that Lauzon isn't trusted to do.

I've been pretty consistent in saying it's a lot (too much, IMHO) to give up, but explained why NSH wouldn't consider it otherwise.

Again, it's not an exchange of 7th dmen. TOR is getting a better, cheaper healthy scratch (I know Timmins isn't healthy right now, but I digress) than the one they're giving up and they're adding a respectable 3rd pairing player, with three years of max retention (plus more with the ARI trade, but I don't see them doing that for just a 3rd).

You've never heard of a 40 year old athlete regressing? The odds of Giordano not doing so aren't in his favour. Of course one game isn't a useful sample size, but Gio only logged 15:50 in a game that went all the way to a shootout last night. What if he's already no longer a player that can handle almost 19 min a game?

Anyway, it's late and I'm tired. Were you ever going to explain your original argument that Lauzon is somehow less valuable because his team didn't make the playoffs last season, or are we done here?

Switch Michael McCarron for Thomas Novak. Then the trade is way better.

Leafs aren't giving up a 1st for a depth D as the main piece.
A 1st is worth a reliable top 4D like Tanev, DeMelo etc.
