His point production has been fine for what he's making and he's only 23 so he stands a chance of becoming a really good contract in the next few years if he keeps improving.

Not a chance... $4.8m for a 2C is not market value but it isn't the one worst contracts. He has pretty solid point production and is a shutdown forward... I don't think that his value is far off

Plus I would also add that he is a very very good defensive forward and is the third shutdown center for the Hurricanes

You said it yourself, Kotkaniemi averages only 14 minutes a game last season and wasn't on the first unit PP. His pts/60 mins is actually really good for a defensive center. Nobody is going to be surprised if he puts up 65 points this season with more ice time and responsibility. The kid is 23 years old, not even close to one of the worst contracts in the league

And imagine thinking that total points is the only way to measure production. As people have already pointed out to you, he put up 42 points while not getting top 6 minutes or consistent power play time. He's 23 years old and putting up very solid 5v5 numbers while playing a responsible 200ft game. Keep ignoring the facts. Literally everyone in this comment section disagrees with you...
