Description
Pens get Karlsson. At this point, who else is going for him? And the Sharks aren't going to fully get what they want. In order to get him, Pens really need to clear Petry, Carter, and Granlund.
Petry likely won't wave for most teams...so how about a three team deal...Petry to Wings and play at home, Wings send Maata and ... to Blackhawks, and Hawks send Zaitsev to Pens.
Pens then package Zaitsev, Granlund, Carter (for LTIR), picks and a prospect or two for Karlsson and Duclair w/ no salary retention.
Probably have to do same cap manipulation somehow...

0% chance Pens take on Karlsson at his full 11.5 cap hit...... 0% any team does given age and history of injuries. Its just not happening.

Detroit passes, Olli Maatta is a solid 2nd pairing defensive defensman that can chip in 20 points per season. He's cheaper and no way are we throwing a 3rd in for Petry. When Pittsburgh only gave up Matheson and a 4th round pick for an additional year. Pass we've no interest in Petry what so ever.

Hopefully Zaitsev is a mainstay in the press box this season but if not he's a good option for low minutes on the 3rd pairing. Trading him for a LD seems counter to their plan of rolling with Vlasic, Philips, Roos, and/or Kaiser on the left side. Plus they have Tinordi as a veteran presence. On top of that Maatta has one gear and it's low.

I think you have some good ideas here. Like the idea of Duclair. I don't think Carter waived for SJ though. Would probably have to deal Rutta in this scenario.

Detroit extended Maata because they like Maata. At the TDL, next summer, next TDL sure a deal could be made.

Since when is Maata a solid 2nd pairing defensive defenseman? Like don't get me wrong I like Maata, but he is not a quality defensive defenseman. He's more of a 2 way and at 18 minutes hes more of a borderline 3rd pairing guy w/ pp/pk time.

Well he was this past season, He was basically the reason why Filip Hronek put up hi best season to date. But unfortunately he wound up getting pneumonia and missed 4 games. And after that was pretty much regulated to the 3rd pairing.

Maata has not been a solid 2nd pairing guy since his 3rd shoulder injury vs Philly in 2019. IDK what it did, but he hasn't been the same since. More than likely he will be regulated to the third pairing again.

Maatta > Petry

we like Maatta, don't care that Petry puts up more offence, Maatta has a solid defensive game.

Shockingly, players can actually go to other teams and have a bigger role. Maatta was a good second pairing defenseman for us all last year and that's an objective fact. The fact that you don't know this means you didn't watch him this year so it probably wasn't wise to share your opinion on something you don't actually have any insight into.

8 D and 11 Forwards.. bold move.

No one is taking Karlsson's AAV at 100% and Jeff Carter says no.

A group Montreal fans were sure Petry was coming to Detroit last year and he didn't. Just like this year Petry won't be coming to Detroit this year. It's funny that Matheson had a better year than Petry at both ends of the ice.

Since when is 78 GP 6 G 17 A 23 PTS -9 43% Cf 43% FF a good second pairing DMan? Like even comparing to Jeff Petry 61 GP 5 G 26 A 31 PTS +2 50% CF and 50% FF is marginally better than Maata this past year. Maybe try not talking out of your rear end when numbers do not back up your claim.

I'm sorry did you just quote corsi and Fenwick at me? Oh and you added plus minus in case I needed more useless numbers without any context.

Buddy just saying his possession numbers aren't outstanding and he's average at best in the league as a 2nd pairing....... meaning he is replaceable. Especially considering he is seeing approximately seeing 3rd pairing TOI with specialty minutes as well.

I'm not saying he is bad by any means given his role I'm just saying he's average and could be improved on. Like there's worse defenders in the league and better defenders in the league.

If the Wings make the playoffs I don't think that its going to be based off of Maatta's on ice performance.
