A member of their cup winning team who showed some promise then but ran into health issues that stalled his growth. Why not try bringing him back to where he was most successful to see if he can recapture something? It seemed to work for Sammy Blais. Sundqvist is older and has been through more than Blais, but he was better than Blais to begin with, and at minimum wage for one year, it’s pretty much zero risk. Good signing.

I'm concerned about his health, given the number of injuries he's had over the past few seasons. HOWEVER, it's league minimum. Even if the worse case scenario happens where he's too injured to play, but not injured enough for LTIR, the contract isn't going to hurt.

On a related note... The Blues only have $1.6 million left and they NEED to sign a backup goalie. Maybe this wasn't the best choice with very limited money left. They do have one player in the AHL that played NHL games last year, but that's risking a LOT. Like your whole season can go up in flames if you don't have a solid backup.

I believe that Hofer would require waivers, so he is likely the back up. They could still sign a veteran at the minimum as an injury insurance (not sure what else they have in net on the farm).

Hofer is showing as still waivers exempt, so they could sign a cheap veteran backup -- maybe one who's good but a little injury prone -- and do what Carolina did with Kochetkov: split Hofer's time between the NHL and AHL so he gets more NHL starts without having to spend 50 games just sitting on the bench.

No they don't. Hofer is the back-up, Subban is the emergency 3rd and they also have Zherenko coming up, who is as good a goalie prospect as Hofer.

Hofer will not be bouncing back and forth, he's with the Blues now and that's that. Plus, they already have Subban and Zherenko in the wings, if necessary.

Hofer has played 8 games in the NHL. He's a real risk as backup with such a short resume.

Zherenko has an even shorter resume with only 25 AHL games,

Suban has had one season where he had an above average save percentage. He spent last season in the AHL.

Correct. And those are the backup options. So plenty of goalies.

I would not be happy with any of these players as backup. Having three bad backups is not a good position to be in.

Dude, what are you on about? In no way, shape or form is Hofer bad. Subban is good enough for an emergency 3rd. Zherenko is also not bad, though obviously he is green. Guess what... every good goalie ever in history was green at some point. Doesn't make them bad. And if no green goalie who is not "bad" ever got to gain that experience in the NHL, well gosh, we'd never have any good goalies. Or even bad goalies. The Blues are not expecting to contend at their usual level this season, so now is as good a time as any to season Hofer. Clearly, you don't know much about the Blues, but I can assure you they actually have quite a nice track record with green goalies who are not actually "bad".

But best news of all: It's not your team, so you don't need to sweat it. Yay!!!

He's played 8 games in the NHL and his saves above expected is -0.6. That's not good.

Subban hasn't has a positive saves above expected stat since 2017-2018.

Zherenko has never played in the NHL and only had a 0.913 save percentage last year. It is unlikely that will stay there in the NHL.

Furthermore, Binnington's best season was his rookie season and he's steadily gotten worse since then, so you NEED a backup who is capable of playing at least 30 games, preferably, you want one that could be the #1 by the end of the year.

(sigh)

You should really watch hockey some time. Almost everything you say is factually incorrect, disingenuous or portraying an uninformed opinion as fact. And when people who actually understand what the Blues are doing try to inform you, you just ignore and repeat more flawed stats. Good luck with all that, man.
