I think the smart move would be to allow Mateychuk to develop in CLE for at least a year or 2 and maybe even give Jiricek another year. Don’t see it being beneficial with burying Bean in the AHL.

I think Voronkov most likely starts in CLE and is called up by December to play wing for a season then moves to Center. Jenner will be one of our centers this year but moves to wing after this season so long as Sillinger doesn’t have another down year and he can take over the 2C.

I think mateychuk needs at least a year or two. Jackets shouldn’t rush him. Honestly if he can cook for two years when provorov is gone him on his ELC will be a great fit. I think Voronkov will come up halfway through the year similar to marchenko. Chinkhov needs time with the monsters and can be the first man up if there’s injuries

Isn’t Roslovic pretty good though? Feel like I take that quickly if I’m Colorado.

Yeah if Colorado turns that down there are quite a few contending teams that would make this trade work.

Both trades are underpayments but that roster would be the dream for the team by end of season.

Although Peeke should be on the 2RD/3RD, not the bench.

Avs probably decline due to cap space even with retention. The time for this trade was pre-RyJo.

He has alot of talent just makes several bad mistakes. If he was a bit smarter he would be hands down our 1C but his hockey IQ is...badly lacking for the professional level.

This is my hill. Peeke should absolutely be 7th D at best. He's everything we complain about with Gudbranson, but blocks more shots and takes fewer penalties. We may as well play the $4M-dollar-man we're stuck with who's also good for the locker room.

Peeke is quicker on his feet, blocks shots like crazy, makes a good first pass, plays pk and 5v5 against top lines.

I think he'll also excel under babcocks systems this season, and hopefully he's not expected to play 22 mins a night again... Was too much for him last year. If he's playing 18-19 minutes a night he will play much better then last season.

This is probably my other hill, which might be why Peeke is the first. (And I'm not trying to be rude, I apologize in advance, it's a little mini-rant because it's a pet peeve)

"plays pk and 5v5 against top lines" isn't anything special, if he plays them well that's a discussion point, but he just doesn't. Literally anyone can technically play PK and 5v5 against top lines. For D-men to play 200+ minutes for Columbus last year, he's 8th/9 for relative expected G% at 5v5 (Gudbranson is last) at -1.3%. Werenski was a +16.8%. His on-ice xG% was 42.4%. Last year he was a 44.6%, ahead of only Jake Bean and Dean Kukan. On the PK in 2021-22, he was a -31.2 xG differential, and a -30.7 xG differential this year, good for 4th-worst in the league for D-men to play 50+ PK minutes (Gudbranson was -12.8).

I get that's not the whole picture, but it's hard to find any advanced or traditional stats that do paint him in a good light, in any situation. Most have him in the bottom-third of the league.

"If he's playing 18-19 minutes a night he will play much better then last season." I get if you play fewer minutes you're more fresh, but is an extra 3 minutes or so a night really the difference between decent-bottom-pair and borderline unusable? That's, what, 3 shifts for a defenseman? "He's better if he plays less" and "he's not that good so play him less" are the same thing IMO, if you knowingly have to shelter someone because they're a net-negative on average, you're better off trying someone that's not a known net-negative.

Maybe I'm just being ignorant, I've never played hockey on even a respectable amateur level. However, "just play him less" isn't an argument we typically hear for budding solid defensive D-men like Peeke is supposed to be, it's the kind of argument we hear for washed-up offensive D-men who bring something unique to the table (i.e. OEL, Klingberg, etc).

He’s a decent playmaker and has great speed and quickness, but his issue is lack of compete level and slow mental processing speed - especially on the defensive end. He often gets caught flat footed and out of position, and will never hound a puck carrier to force a turnover.

The reason is much maligned in Columbus is because he’s played center the last 2.5 years and that has accentuated his shortcomings. I think he’d be a good middle-6 winger, but also needs the right pieces around him.

Good summary, thank you.

I’m sure someone would be in the market for a player of his skill and pedigree. In Colorado he could profile like Evan Rodrigues did last year (utility third liner that plays top 6 when needed).

Yes Colorado would be a good fit for them because they need another middle-6 winger. Maybe at the deadline since they have no cap space.
