One More Year in Suckville

Description
Habs clean house and go deep in the 2023 draft, with an eye to being in the lottery again in 2024 (and maybe 2025).

Rationale behind trades:

1) Pittsburgh has narrow window to cash in on Crosby and Malkin. Dvorak offers a solid two-way middle-6 forward at just over $2M and Harris solidifies an aging D corps and helps with future rebuild.

2) Seattle gets Anderson, a strong, fast, hard-hitting RW for four years at $4M. Helps them battle Vegas, Kings and other bruisers in the West.

3) Anaheim trades down from #2 to #5, but gets #14 and Mesar, last year's #26 pick and Montreal's top prospect as well.

Drouin, who finished the season well at centre, gets another look. If all goes well, he, Gurianov and/or Monahan can be moved at the trade deadline.

Habs draft:
2 -- Fantilli (and puts an end to the PLD madness)
20 -- Best of Danielson, But or Honzek
31 -- Seeking fallen angels here, but looking to take a D (Simashev, Bonk, Molledyk) or Hrabel (G)
33 -- Hrabel or BPA
37 -- BPA

For 5,14 and a top-50 NHL prospect? I wish someone would insult me so nicely.

Huh. First time I've seen someone float a Josh-Anderson-to-Seattle trade, so kudos for at least trying something new.

At this point I don't know what fair value for Anderson is; no one can seem to agree on it, so I'll set that aside for now. I don't think Seattle goes for this, mainly because their forward group is so deep that adding someone like Anderson just isn't a pressing need. If they do trade a first round pick for someone it'll likely be for a top-four defenseman or a player with more goalscoring punch.

I think Hughes' obsession with not taking back parts of some of the lousy contracts Bergevin left him is weird. He should do what he can to clean house. Eating a couple of years of Devo's contract or even a fraction of Anderson makes sense if it nets a decent return. The sooner we turn the page on Bergevin's madness, the better.

I get it, but Wideman is cheap depth. Obviously, if the Blues don't want him, there's probably someone with a spare 7th (or stick bag) willing to have him.

Makes sense if Verbeek were at all tempted by Michkov, but we have no idea what the scouts are telling him.

I looked at is as Eberle and Bjorkstrand are small and play small. No one is getting by Vegas unless they can match them in the trenches. Eberle is also getting older and slower, so Anderson gives them something they don't have.

Need those spots for Hoffman, Armia and Eddy. Plus, Anderson doesn't need retention to get a good return and Dvorak is young enough you can keep him on the team as injury insurance

Yeah the blues have Rosen, Perunovich, Tucker, Bortuzzo trying to get the 7th and 8th D man spots. We gotta give time to our younger guys Tucker and Perunovich

I went back and forth on retaining for Anderson, but in the end thought it worth doing to remove a big hurdle for Seattle fans. If the Habs are going to be garbage for another year or two, they might as well get value for Dvorak and let Drouin and Monahan fill that third or fourth centre role, along with Jake Evans. Meanwhile, the Pens' window is closing soon, so Dvorak would be helpful to them this year.
