Description

Cooley said that the arena deal that fell through had a big impact on his decision to go back to school. With no solution on the horizon, Arizona maybe forced to make some difficult decisions. Cooley could end up staying in school and use the college free agent route to leave the Coyotes organization. In this draft another scenario could present itself where Arizona is faced with drafting another player going to college in Will Smith. The Jackets have been linked to really liking Will Smith. If this scenario came to pass this could be a solution to both teams.

The concept of this trade is to give Arizona two players that will not be able to use the College FA loophole. Now, I understand it is very rare that top picks do this but the situation in the desert is becoming very unclear with each passing day. Essentially, the trade basically sets up with the Jackets drafting Leo Carlsson at 3OA. Then let the draft play out and if Will Smith drops to 6OA the Jackets and Coyotes make the deal. The Jackets get rights to Cooley and Will Smith while the Coyotes get Leo Carlsson and Coke Sillinger.

For the Jackets this fits the timeline of the rebuild. This should make the Jackets very competitive in 2024/2025 but make them a real contender and favorite by 2025/2026.

Arizona owns the rights to Carlsson and gets Coke Sillinger who they would have team control for a further 5 yrs.

The Calgary trade addresses two areas of concern. The Jackets get a center who can play a two way game for the short term and a goalie who could step in should either Elvis or Tarasov not be able to handle the rigors of the long season.

Boston’s trade is based on a potential rebuild in Boston. The core is old and needs to be replaced. This starts that process.

Boston aint rebuilding. We have no picks and our core isnt old. They are 24, 25, 26, 29, 26, 27, 26, and marchand so soon or in their prime. Not saying its a stupid trade but just the reasoning. A grzelcyk trade im for but CC aint waiving.

The deal with Arizona is super interesting. Would have to digest it more but on first thought it's certainly temping. Not sure exactly how you compare the value of Cooley and 3rd/Carlsson, but my impression if CBJ might need to add a bit more, even with and leverage from Cooley's comments. Could be off on that though.

Yeah I can't see them wanting a Roslovic for Backlund 1 for 1 deal anyway even if you don't factor in his role in CGY's locker room.

Before the season was even done in Minnesota it was expected he would stay, it didn’t have a “big impact” he said it tipped him back to school. He’s going to sign after next year, every single one of these is wishful thinking.

I still see Cooley ultimately signing with the Coyotes, and frankly if I’m AZ, I tell him to take his time anyway. Let the team bottom out for another year or two, then be ready to roll once they move to HOU, SLC, KC, whatever. Basically what the A’s are doing with Oakland right now.

If not, it’s an interesting trade for CBJ, one I’d consider. I don’t think Smith falls to 6, but if CBJ can still end up with Cooley and say, Dvorsky or Danielsson, I’d be pretty happy.

Don’t see Calgary making that trade. Backland is important to them as he’s seen as their next captain.
As far as the Cooley trade goes, I can’t really see us moving 3 and sillinger for him and 6. Id rather take my chances on Leo and Cole (even after his rough year).

I think so, Coyle probably gets a 2nd+ and a prospect, as well as Grz, package them together and you might get a first. Boston might send a 3rd or something. If we're moving Coyle, who is essential to our bottom 6 and may be out 2nd line center next year, I would want a player to replace him. Our center depth is terrible.

As a Bruins fan I'd do this in a heartbeat, open up some much needed cap, add some younger players, and add a first in this years draft.

I don't think this deal should matter if they are in a rebuild or not. Opening up cap is the main priority here and the B's aren't going to committ to a rebuild anyway.

Not sure Coyle waives though.

The issue with that is that the optics don't look good for a team looking for a potential buyer. With the success of Seattle and Vegas so quickly the NHL has made expansion look more attractive. If I was a billionaire, I would buy the coyotes and move them just because they have so many assets and their only real issue is revenue. Having star players jump ship is a bad look for anyone buying the team.

No. The trade only makes sense for the CBJ if they were to end up with Cooley and Smith. The idea of this trade is to solidify the C and D for the contention window. Ottawa’s pick severely downgrades the value of the trade and would require more from Arizona which makes it not worth it to them.

I don't know what to tell you other than the cost to move up in the draft is really high. Cooley has considerably more value than Sillinger. More value than 3 spots in the draft.

There are only so many pro sports teams in NA/ the world. ****ty, good, someone is going to buy the Coyotes for big money, and not on the premise that they can win a Cup next year, but how is the team going to develop over the next decade+. Plus, moving is cheaper than expansion.

To wit, Expansion isn’t an option right now. NHL wanted to play catch-up with the NFL at 32, and I don’t see them going to 34 before then. Not to mention having a failing franchise constantly stepping on rakes isn’t a good look in the interim.

As for Cooley, I don’t think he jumps ship; but, I’m not surprised to see him waiting out until there is more certainty on where this team is goin. The kid is clearly beyond the challenge the NCAA offers, and he has millions waiting for him in the pros. Just saying “he was always going to go back for another year” just feels…wrong (not saying you’re saying that, just saying)
