Anaheim for sure. pending UFA's don't get traded pre-signed they sign extensions after the trade so they are valued as rentals in the trade

No team would trade for him unless they know they can extend him.

Lol I think he meant it’s rare nhl has sign and trades and there’s no way you do this deal without that extension

There have been others that have been traded and then extended, but the first and only player to be extended before being traded is Matthew Tkachuk. It's because Florida wanted an 8 year deal and they couldn't sign it because they didn't have his rights at the deadline so Treliving had to do it.

Ahh that does sound right. Nhl should make it a bit more enticing for those deals tbh. Nba does a good job at making it worth everyone’s while to do so.

Anaheim wouldn't contend next season with Matthews AND McDavid, so what's the rush? The Ducks can afford to wait until 2024 and make him an offer then, without spending any assets to acquire him.

Probably, if made available Toronto would probably allow teams to talk to his agent. That doesn't raise his trade value though.

That does happen but it doesn't raise a players value. The most the selling team can do is give the buyer the middle finger and say "no you don't have permission to talk to him or his agent." That's what Vancouver did this year with Horvat and Buffalo did for a while with Eichel (though he wasn't a pending UFA), eventually Buffalo let teams talk to Eichel and agent after serious bidders emerged.

If made available Matthews would get an excellent return, but at the end of the day the reality is that he is not signed before a trade, and unlike with Tkachuk (who signed right before the trade to Florida) there is no advantage to him signing an extension with Toronto as part of the trade. A trade for Matthews would look very similar value wise to what Erik Karlsson returned as a "1 year rental"

I understand your point on the comment, but Matthews and McDavid on the Ducks... they probably contend lol. That is 100 goals and 200+ points between them.

The other is Hossa to Ottawa. Though unlike Tkachuk, Hossa wasn't aware he was being traded as part of that contract signing. That's why the Tkachuk deal is called the first "true" Sign and Trade in NHL history

Tkachuk was signed prior to the trade because he was not legally able to sign an 8 year extension with the Panthers. Due to the covid CBA change a player must be on your roster prior to the TDL of final year of their contract to sign an 8 year extension with your team. That is also why LA only signed Fiala to a 7 year deal. With a player going into the final year of their contract they are still able to sign an 8 deal with a new team because that TDL before it ends has not passed yet. In this case if lets say Matthews is not signed to a new deal by next years trade deadline then the only team that can sign him to an 8 year deal after the TDL is Toronto, however if he hits unrestricted free agency then on July 1st 2024 then no team can sign him to anything more than 7 years including Toronto. Going back to Tkachuk, Calgary still retained Tkachuk's rights after July 1st due to being a restricted free agent, but no team owns your rights if you become an unrestricted free agent

It's the rule on here, all leaf players have no value. Now that they lost, Matthews, Nylander and Marner will be traded for a 10th of what they are worth

happy Perhaps it's escaped your attention that we were minus ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-NINE in goal differential this season? Adding 100 goals would not have brought us within 45 goals of the last (wild-card) team qualifying for the playoffs.

Sorry I am dying right now, lol I had no idea it was -129 goal differential. Touché. Maybe them scoring those 100 (plus the extra 100 for assists assuming they aren't ALL to one another) takes place of some of the extra 45 being scored against them? Plus the defensive prospects for the Ducks probably take a huge step with those two at center. Weird to see that number and also the talking point when Anaheim is competing in the future.

Honestly it's things like this that make me wonder if it's almost better for Anaheim to draft Michkov at #2 this year. Obviously this will depend more on scouting opinions at the end of the day but I think whenever Michkov does to come over to the NHL he could absolutely end up as the 2nd best player in the draft. IIRC he's under contract with SKA until the summer of 2026 (3 more years) and IMO Anaheim's defense as well as Dostal are at least 3 years away without some major external additions brought in to bolster the blue line. There's also nothing wrong with taking 3 more years either, Kopitar lead the Kings to the cup at age 24 and Brown was 27. Zegras will be 24 turning 25 by then and Terry will be 28
