I'll agree a number of fans throughout Canada "hate the Leafs". But interestedly there are a lot of Leaf fans throughout Canada, just watch an Leafs away game in other Canadian cities, there are so many Leaf fans in the stands, you often don't know who is the home team.
Yeah, I don't really get "the hate". Leafs haven't been "successful" for decades. But really neither has any Canadian team. Betcha half of the CapFriendly followers can remember the great Oilers teams, which were over thirty years ago.

There's multiple reasons/factors why some hate Leafs nation, its too long to list and a lot of it is just petty nonsense so don't let it bother you!

But aren't there 31 other teams that don't follow through either, for example the Nucks this year?

It's harder when you try and make your point across when the other person says: you're a Leafs fan so you don't know anything about hockey so trying to figure out the cause of all of this

The list is long & goes back as far as the Original 6. Since expansion in ‘68 it gained momentum & has never stopped.

1968 1st expansion the beginning of obvious signs of greed. Leafs/Habs didn’t want to split HNIC pie 3 ways so denied Vancouver joining.

Every Saturday no matter how crappy the Leafs we’re they play at 7pm EST. Road games on Saturday still the same time. Leaf fans claim cuz popular & money makers for TV. Nobody would know since no other team gets a guaranteed prime time slot. That is from a Canadian crown corporation from all ppl’s tax money.

Leaf fans either too young to know or old & forget on purpose about how cups were won & throw in other fans faces when they’ve no team in the league back then. Toronto & Montreal had territorial rights to players when before the draft existed. Not difficult to monopolize talent pools back then let alone only had to win 2 rounds for a cup.

I used to live in Toronto and I hate the Leafs because of how obnoxious the fans are. I had folks throw stuff at me in the streets on a few occasions for wearing Senators merch and in a couple instances I've had Leaf fans try to 'convert me' to their team by overhyping their players. I remember when Tavares was signed fans were going nuts and one guy would not leave me alone for an entire 4 hour shift since "they're going to win now bro; he was the missing piece." Every player they have is better than your team, but once they're traded they're whiny losers who can barely stay in the NHL. I also personally find the concept of "you should be honoured to play for us, so accept less than market value for your services" as a bit weird (but maybe that's because I cheer for the Senators and they're super mediocre since 2004 ish). Like if my boss, or someone around me, said that about my job I'd hate that. Athletes are overpaid and all, but still a weird concept.

Then, they act as though this is all normal and okay since they're just 'passionate' and 'a true fan,' when in reality they're just being annoying.

So in all, I find most Leaf fans obnoxious and arrogant. I'm sure someone is going to hop on here saying "no way man, that's just anecdotal and not everyone is like that" which is fair, but picking a team is an inherently subjective thing so whatever. Most of my family are Leaf fans so I hope they win, but I also find some sadistic enjoyment when they lose.

It's the pretensiousness and obnoxiousness from what is actually a very small percentage of Leafs fans in my personal opinion that gets me annoyed from time to time. That said, I could say that for almost all Canadian fanbases, and a handful of US ones. Tbh though I wouldn't let it worry you and if that's all you truly have to worry about in life then that ain't a lot!

Your entire point is reasonable (as a Leafs fan, it's sometimes hard to talk to other Leafs fans who either overrate their players (Mitch Marner IMO) or underrate their players (Morgan Rielly IMO) based on their personal narrative) but I just wanted to quote you here bc that's kind of the same for my family (whom are mostly Sens and Oilers fans) where I do want to see them have success but at the same time, find it funny when they don't

The issue is social media. I've enjoyed the Leafs for decades, especially the late 90s teams with Sundin, Domi, Corson, Kaberle, Felix, Curtis, & Co.
