<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>prostyle</b></div><div>I do not see how this is not a great trade for the Canucks.
Let's break down the trade.
Demko - Forsberg GAA about equal. GAA would be better as both teams have been somewhat of a mess.
Ostapchuk - Was Canada's most mature player at the world juniors. I expect him to fight for a spot next year. 2nd or 3rd line potential with a high likelihood of becoming an NHL player.
Lassi Thomson - First round draft pick however underperforming. Has a good skillset. Still has potential however Ottawa is now stacked with defensemen almost NHL ready and does need to shed at least one.
...and we have to throw in a first round draft pick. Seems crazy to me. I may be wrong and have to watch Demko a hell of lot more...</div></div>

As someone who watches both teams a lot but is a huge Sens fan, I think this is a bad trade for the Canucks. Sure, Demko and Forsberg may have comparable GAA this season, but when you look at Demko as a whole it changes the picture considerably. 0.915% for the last two seasons on a porous Canucks team with 64 starts last season (according to capfriendly). Demko is the reason why the Canucks win games and at only $5mil is a huge asset for them.

Thompson retains some value as a RD prospect, but isn't a huge draw for a lot of teams. He has been heating up in Belleville though, so if he has a strong end to the season there it may change the conversation in a month. Furthermore, RD isn't a glaring hole for Vancouver. They've got Bear, Myers, Juulsen, and Hronek on RD with Burroughs also able to play RD. We'll say Bear and Hronek are the good ones, but Myers is a passable 3RD. Vancouver doesn't need another 'fighting for a spot' RD.
From what I've read about Ostapchuk, he has a middle-6 forward ceiling. Vancouver has a lot of bottom-6, middle-6 forward who can play centre already (Aman, Dries, Joshua, Studnicka) so I don't think that's a weakness for them either. When you consider Miller can play C and Vancouver has Raty coming through the pipeline, the need for a middle-6 C becomes even less important.

While the idea of prospects are certainly valuable and worthwhile for any team, I just don't see the pieces offered here as significant enough to pull Demko from the Canucks. <em>Especially</em> with salary retention. If Ottawa were to throw in more substantial prospects, such as Kleven or Jarventie, a conversation may be worthwhile (let's face it, Ian Clark can make any mediocre goalie a NHL caliber tender in a few months) but I don't see a world where Demko is gone for middling futures like this.
