Just because the Sens paid a lot to acquire him, shouldn't make him "so valuable". I really like the direction of the Sens...along with Sabres and Wings. Gonna be a force in the East in the last half of this decade....but only if spending the cap wisely.</div></div>
Totally fair. I think part of the reason why he's getting such high contracts is name recognition which could absolutely come back to bite them. However, he is playing at a rate similar to Patrick Laine, who signed for 8.7x4. Laine has a bit more of a reputation as an elite goal scorer, but Cat is very close to him in terms of points and on-ice impact. I figured that would be a good cap comparable, but took a bit off since Laine is also overpaid for what he contributes.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Herb_Brooks</b></div><div>cap strapped with no goalie and without a single playoff appearance! whew! go sens go!</div></div>
Yeah, the goalie tandem is the largest weak spot on this roster by a country mile! I think the main issue this year has been health though; Forsberg has been solid when healthy (especially in the bubble season) and Sogaard has been serviceable as well. If things go well for Ottawa and everyone stays relatively healthy I think they would be alright for a legitimate playoff shot.
Keep in mind though, the reason why the Senators are cap strapped is because they're locking up their core for the future, now. Tkachuk, Norris, Stutzle, and Chabot are taking hefty chunks of the cap today, but in three years the cap will be dramatically different than it is now and those contracts will be just fine and have 3-5 more years to go. So a bit tight now, but down the stretch they'll be fine.
Besides, with goaltending being so hard to pin down it can sometimes be a surprise even when you have a good tandem on paper (VAN to start the year, PHI with Hart, FLA, CGY) or when you have a seemingly bad one (TOR, CAR in 2018-19, VGK). Heck, even both (EDM, SEA, STL).

I also don't think Kleven will make the team next year to start and he might come up if there are injuries. He's fresh out of the NCAA and should be given some time to develop and play loads of mins in the AHL before being a bottom-pair D.
I would not break up Timmy and Brady at any point! I would maybe even slide Norris in on the RW on that line to see if that works. Give Norris an easier time than playing Centre and see if that can help him stay healthy.

I like your D lines a lot. I know our farm team is cramped with LD as well (Donovan, Hamara) so I was trying to alleviate a bit of that bottleneck by keeping Kleven up, but I agree it makes more sense to bring in JBD and let Kleven marinate a bit in the AHL.
I do like the idea of putting Norris on RW. It gives more depth on our weaker side, plus keeps Giroux and Grieg together. Great plan there. Your trade does make sense to me as well; should honestly just delete this team and remake it with your suggestions instead lol.

I wouldn't mind seeing Joseph traded and Sokolov brought up to fill that spot. I think DeBrincat will end up wanting a pinch more (8.4?), so that cap space may be needed.
EDIT: Otherwise, solid set up and a great team if they stay healthy.

Why are we hated so much and Lines for game 1
I used to live in Toronto and I hate the Leafs because of how obnoxious the fans are. I had folks throw stuff at me in the streets on a few occasions for wearing Senators merch and in a couple instances I've had Leaf fans try to 'convert me' to their team by overhyping their players. I remember when Tavares was signed fans were going nuts and one guy would not leave me alone for an entire 4 hour shift since "they're going to win now bro; he was the missing piece." Every player they have is better than your team, but once they're traded they're whiny losers who can barely stay in the NHL. I also personally find the concept of "you should be honoured to play for us, so accept less than market value for your services" as a bit weird (but maybe that's because I cheer for the Senators and they're super mediocre since 2004 ish). Like if my boss, or someone around me, said that about my job I'd hate that. Athletes are overpaid and all, but still a weird concept.
Then, they act as though this is all normal and okay since they're just 'passionate' and 'a true fan,' when in reality they're just being annoying.
So in all, I find most Leaf fans obnoxious and arrogant. I'm sure someone is going to hop on here saying "no way man, that's just anecdotal and not everyone is like that" which is fair, but picking a team is an inherently subjective thing so whatever. Most of my family are Leaf fans so I hope they win, but I also find some sadistic enjoyment when they lose.

Honestly, I'd rather us bring up Sokolov or Jarventie than sign Monahan. I see you put Monahan as a 1-yr signing, which I could get on board with at the end of the day, but with his injury history and our talent on LW I'd prefer to let the kids ride.
Disclaimer: I am also scared to have too much youth on the LW. Kelly can help with that I suppose if the 4th line needs it, or we can resign Brassard to another 1-yr league minimum pact.

Playoff hockey will be back next year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>prostyle</b></div><div>I do not see how this is not a great trade for the Canucks.
Let's break down the trade.
Demko - Forsberg GAA about equal. GAA would be better as both teams have been somewhat of a mess.
Ostapchuk - Was Canada's most mature player at the world juniors. I expect him to fight for a spot next year. 2nd or 3rd line potential with a high likelihood of becoming an NHL player.
Lassi Thomson - First round draft pick however underperforming. Has a good skillset. Still has potential however Ottawa is now stacked with defensemen almost NHL ready and does need to shed at least one.
...and we have to throw in a first round draft pick. Seems crazy to me. I may be wrong and have to watch Demko a hell of lot more...</div></div>
As someone who watches both teams a lot but is a huge Sens fan, I think this is a bad trade for the Canucks. Sure, Demko and Forsberg may have comparable GAA this season, but when you look at Demko as a whole it changes the picture considerably. 0.915% for the last two seasons on a porous Canucks team with 64 starts last season (according to capfriendly). Demko is the reason why the Canucks win games and at only $5mil is a huge asset for them.
Thompson retains some value as a RD prospect, but isn't a huge draw for a lot of teams. He has been heating up in Belleville though, so if he has a strong end to the season there it may change the conversation in a month. Furthermore, RD isn't a glaring hole for Vancouver. They've got Bear, Myers, Juulsen, and Hronek on RD with Burroughs also able to play RD. We'll say Bear and Hronek are the good ones, but Myers is a passable 3RD. Vancouver doesn't need another 'fighting for a spot' RD.
From what I've read about Ostapchuk, he has a middle-6 forward ceiling. Vancouver has a lot of bottom-6, middle-6 forward who can play centre already (Aman, Dries, Joshua, Studnicka) so I don't think that's a weakness for them either. When you consider Miller can play C and Vancouver has Raty coming through the pipeline, the need for a middle-6 C becomes even less important.
While the idea of prospects are certainly valuable and worthwhile for any team, I just don't see the pieces offered here as significant enough to pull Demko from the Canucks. <em>Especially</em> with salary retention. If Ottawa were to throw in more substantial prospects, such as Kleven or Jarventie, a conversation may be worthwhile (let's face it, Ian Clark can make any mediocre goalie a NHL caliber tender in a few months) but I don't see a world where Demko is gone for middling futures like this.

I don't see OTT making this move at all. Garland would end up as a bottom-6 winger for us and $5mil is a bit much for that role. That being said, OP did state OTT was a placeholder more than an actual suggestion, but I'd be surprised to see him go for a 2nd rounder.

Cap Squeeze next year
To get some cap space back we could always trade away Joseph. Put Gauthier at 3RW and put Brown or Watson on there (they'd both be ~$1mil) even though they're both incredibly meh. Gives a bit more wiggle room if DeBrincat wants more or if some of our other RFAs want more, such as Pinto.

I think the offer for some of these guys is low as well; no way DeBrincat signs for 8x8, for example.
I'd keep Brannstrom and sign him for 3x$1.75M as <a href="/users/Claesson4Norris" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Claesson4Norris</a> suggested, put Kastelic as 4C, don't resign Holden and give his salary to DeBrincat to keep 'em, Joseph as 3RW (or better yet, trade him away) but don't sign Bjugstad and use that money to boost some of our RFAs, put Grieg on 3LW, Sokolov 4LW, Brassard as a scratch. I do like Bjugstad so maybe sign him over Watson, but I do see the value of Watson since he's some grit in the bottom-6.
But that involves a lot of our own players so is kind of boring to have as a AC-GM

It's brutal, sure, but from everything swirling about Knies it is going to age well. I did consider changing it from Knies and Toronto to LAK for Kaliyev/Durzi or Clarke so it isn't a rival, but figured LAK would be less inclined to swing for the fences at the moment.
New idea as well... DeBrincat goes to Calgary for Andersson and Vladar, Chabot goes to Seattle for Tolvanen/Gourde and a 1ST

Totally fair. As a Sens fan I am at high risk of overvaluing Chabot, but he is a really good player that gets overlooked because of his team. I picked a trade with Calgary since they have a lot of players capable of playing RD and figured they'd be open to moving one.
As for not being able to afford Chabot, in theory they could. Moving Andersson and Vladar opens approximately $6.7mil in cap space. Throw in the $1mil the cap rises and you're almost there lol. Would Calgary want to do that? No idea, but that's why we're all here eh

I removed the first rounder from the Leafs to make it a 1-for-1. Sure, Leafs may still not want to do this for re-signing purposes but it gives them that top LW they need NOW so I could still see it. Plus, it's boring to keep DeBrincat in a mock-GM thing entitled 'Bad Ideas Only'.
I did remove Bertuzzi based on what you said; impossible is boring too. Added Sheary as RW depth option instead.

Yeah, it would be a huge pay for a rental of DeBrincat, but is done with the thought that Toronto would think the wheels would fall off, as they say, after this season. If they won though, nobody would care.
As for Bertuzzi, I did not know that. Put that in the bad idea pile and I'll think of a replacement.

Honestly, money. I can't see us being able to afford Chabot, Sanderson, and Chychrun beyond this season. With Brannstrom's improved play and Kleven upcoming (not to mention JBD and Thompson improving) I figured a LD would be safe to move so I picked the one with the highest cap hit.
I don't watch too many Flames games but I liked Zadorov last year and figured he'd be an improvement over Hamonic as 2RD to play with Sanderson, our future franchise defenseman. Plus, let's us keep Chychrun on his good side without wasting talent on the 3rd pairing. Adding Vladar was to give some cushion in case Forsberg got injured and Sogaard needed some more AHL time. Happy to reconsider this for a bit more of a defensive stalwart; say Oleksiak or Larsson (purely theoretical, need to ignore NTC issues), plus our boy D'Accord (?) from SEA.
But I did warn this was going to be full of bad ideas.

As a Sens fan, I wouldn't be <strong><em>too</em></strong> mad about this trade but I wouldn't do it myself. I'm not sold on a tandem of Forsberg/Sogaard, but Forsberg/Vladar doesn't seem much better. Especially considering Vladar's $2.2mil cap hit starting next season when we need to resign DeBrincat and Pinto this offseason, Sanderson next season.

Yeah, I have no idea either. I've seen ACGM posts ranging from $8.25mil to $9mil so I kinda went for the middle here. Against it cap-wise so hopefully he doesn't take more, or I'm bad at this and other players sign for cheaper. If not, could package Brannstrom and/or Pinto out for a cheap RD (Dante Fabbro?) and/or a backup goalie? Bring in Grieg to lower the cap a tad and boost DeBrincat... But no idea if that's a good plan or what everyone else thinks.
