Am I missing a rule or doesn't the contract which the team offers the player the contract that needs to be signed?? (The 8 mil one rather than 6.7)

Im not sure if this is what your asking but the compensation is based off a 5 year deal. So if you sign a guy to an offer sheet for 7 years, you take the total money and divide by 5. Thats why even though he signed Byram for 6.7x6, it comes out to an 8M cap hit since 40.5/5 = 6.75.

If the contract is longer than five years, take the total value, divide by 5, and you have the offer sheet value.

I want you to consider carefully the ramifications of tendering that offer sheet. The following season, Colorado has no significant RFAs to re-sign and at least $25 million in cap space. Meanwhile, Buffalo's RFAs in 2024 are Rasmus Dahlin, Peyton Krebs, Casey Mittelstadt, and UPL.

Avs either match or offer sheet Dahlin the year after, lol.

But in all seriousness, Byram probably won't sign that contract, and especially not with a team where he'd still be second banana.

Waddell has definitely set the precedent that sending an offer sheet will end up hurting in the future. Whether or not certain GM’s have the sack to actually do it, that’s another matter.

Now as for this one, I’m pretty sure the Sabres would only really care about locking up Dahlin, which shouldn’t be terribly hard, especially since KA is more than likely to start negotiating this off season, if not already. I would be surprised if Dahlin even has the chance to be sent an offer sheet. Don’t think the Sabres care as much if they end up losing Mitts, Krebs, or even UPL. UPL would hurt a bit more until Levi is ready, but Krebs I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t in Buffalo much longer with the other C prospects the Sabres. Mitts I don’t believe moves the needle much for Buffalo, but I could be wrong there.

the sabres have plenty of cap space and of that group only dahlin is really important, so they’d just match whatever colorado did for him and then let the rest of them walk if it got too crazy. krebs is the only realistic target bc sakic won’t spend on a goalie and mittelstadt isn’t good, and regardless i don’t think they lose sleep over him. besides, colorado will need to worry about keeping toews and then leaving the space for rantanen.

Colorado simply matches that so anything else is irrelevant.
