Poor decisions by Leafs management

Description
I really wish Dubas protected McCann over Kerfoot in Seattle expansion, might not be as good definitively but is a top 6 winger. Have nothing against Amirov at all, hope he has a great life and hockey career, but at the time of the draft, Leafs needed a tough RHD with size and Schneider was the perfect guy. Not trading Amirov to NY, just showing that Leafs are picking Schneider over him, then the Leafs wouldn’t have to trade for McCabe. I think Sandin is going to be a top 4 dman for many years to come, he has a contract dispute in training camp, but he’s young and so did Nylander even holding out almost to mid season.

Braden Schneider isnt even very good, the fact that people are still whining about him is wild. He's not even what the leafs needed then or now, and he's much worse than McCabe so the leafs would still make that trade with chicago. At least pick Mercer or something, he actually fills a need in this team

I think it shows how poor the Leafs have developed competent NHLers when they have to make so many TDL trades....for veteran expiring contracts, while giving youth and picks. What has it really accomplished for the Leafs? Now the Leafs have few true NHL prospects which mean more bottom end signings or overpaid UFAs.

The amount of Leaf fans that say they protected Kerfoot over McCann is staggering.

They protected Holl by going 4 forwards and 4 defenseman. If they didn’t want Holl they would have gone 7 forwards 3 defenseman 🤦‍♂️.

But yes, protecting Holl over McCann was a terrible decision.

Thank you for sandin

I really disliked that trade by the Leafs. I assume Sandin asked to be traded after they traded for McCabe. Only way it makes sense to me. I really like Sandin.

I just checked and he has played 25 mins a game and has 5 pts in 3 games with the Caps so far. Damn.

You guys got a stud. I was excited to have Sandin and Lily in our top four for the next 8-10 years. Sad Sandin is gone now.

I think you’re being a bit harsh; go check out what Tampa and Boston and Oilers all just did. Leafs have traded away a lot of their picks, but still have a mid level prospect pool (much better than Tampa or Boston) so glass half full - Dubas has done a very good job; great if they can make some hay this year.

If the Leafs hadn’t signed Reilly to 8 yr deal, maybe.. but Sandin is not that good imo. He’ll be a 4-6 dman, PP specialist. Leafs got decent value for him and the team (& d corps) is unquestionably better after the trade so I’d do it again 100% of the time

Don't know how you can say I'm being harsh.....yea look what the Bruins and Tampa has done......winning Stanley Cups and being in Conference. Let's talk about the after the playoffs.
Even if the Leafs have mid level prospect pool, they certainly are going be going down in ranking for the next three years because they have traded away so many picks.

Yes but Tampa has won cups and Boston has been to the finals in recent years, Leafs haven’t. They haven’t even gotten out of the first round. Poor asset management. Now Dubas has done well drafting and making some good trades, but some of them decisions like I’ve listed above are head scratchers. That’s the difference.

Hind sight is always 20-20 but none of those moves are head scratchers . Amirov has cancer (which no one could have predicted) - who knows where he would (& may yet still ) be otherwise? McCann has had a career year but some teams lost core pieces to the kraken, Leafs lost no one off their roster & it cost them a mid prospect + 7th - that’s good asset mgmt. all the other trades (ROR, Acciari, McCabe, Lafferty) made the team much better and I’d do them all again 1000%. Tampa gM said it best - late 1st rounders that most likely won’t contribute until 5+ years don’t hold a lot of value to teams trying to win now.

It’s completely harsh - it’s easy to say now after the fact that trading picks at deadline was a mistake because we didn’t win. But I would expect Dubas or any Leafs GM to trade picks / assets to give the team with Matthews, Marner, Nylander in their prime the best chance to win. ‘23 picks won’t impact team at nhl level for 3-5 years; you seriously would prefer them to have kept their 1st rounders instead of getting ROR & McCabe & other good additions?! If yes, I disagree 1000% - trade all of our picks and roll the dice every year while you have Matthews and Marner and Willy. Just hope this is our year 🤞

But isn't that problem that Leafs couldn't develop other players besides Matthews, Nylander and Marner then have to trade for so many expiring contracts, instead of having their own players dot fill that role, and then keeping the picks for future Leafs.
No, I'll disagree , despite having a good team, the Leafs future is not as good as the team is now. Poor player management for now and the future will keep the Leafs as middling to good team, even if they happen to win the Cup in the next two seasons.

I get your point, even agree with it... however McCann does make 5 million as well, so in order to keep him other moves would have to be made and I'm not sure Dubas was ready for that during the off season even though we saw changes leading up to the TDL.

Maybe a critism of Dubas should be that he's not recognizing that changes have to be made sooner because, imagine if some of these moves were made during the off season, where would the team be by now?

You can disagree but that is the model Dubas (& Tampa GM) is using - as long as you have elite talent, you can always fill out the roster; through drafting, trading, and FAs. Those 1st rounders you are crying about have very little chance of ever becoming impact players in nhl. The league mandates parity so best strategy is to throw everything in whil your competitive window is open. Just hasn’t happened for Leafs yet, maybe this year 🤞

Totally, it’s very easy to sit here today with everything we know and be like captain obvious, how couldn’t Dubas see it. That’s just silly.

For me, you don’t resign Rielly and keep McCann (plus you pave a way for Sandin in this hypothetical scenario also).

And yes you would have needed a Rielly replacement since Sandin wasn’t ready then but PHI that year gifted Gostisbehere to ARI that year. Options were there.

Changes not being made sooner is definitely something I agree with. But posts like this confuse me all the time, the Leafs are still 4th overall in the NHL, not sure why people have to look back and not be grateful for the team we have 🤷‍♂️
