The inevitable

Description
Bruins win the cup, Bergeron and Krejci retire.

The cup tax kicks in.

The blueprint is pretty easy. Do I think the Bruins can contend next year if Bergeron and Krejci retire? No. Will management? Yes. You get two more years of contending-ish. Then you rebuild. You hold Pasta for a few years then sell him once he wants out. Then you dont have too many pieces still on the books. Coyle and Pageau will get very solid assets when flipped. Caro too. You have a goalie to build around still or you can flip again

Tried to find a trade comp and I got to Kuemper to the Avs. He got a 1st and Timmins. Spence is comparable to TImmins, and Linus, coming off of a top 2 finish in Vezina race, potentially winning, holds his value at an all-time high. Swayman is a top 12 goalie and poised to become a star. Boston, tight to the cap, is forced to make an impossible decision. But the fact of the matter is that the core is aging, Debrusk is about to get an increase and Marchand and Hall only have two years left. You dont have many picks for the next few years, so you build around what you have.

Kuemper trade comparable is only valid with 22% retention.

I wouldn't do it. Goaltenders are not worth 1st round picks. No exceptions.

Bergy would do one more yr if CUP was in Beantown...he'd have more to give obv.

You get the 1st back and waste it for JJGGPGTXTZ in the 1C hole when Larkin is a UFA...!

Pageau is a very capable center man who is overqualified for the role he is in. His absence has been very noticeable, and they have only been winning thanks to the heroics of Sorokin, Horvat and *Checks Notes* Matt Martin?!?!?

Also if Pageau is “Ass” then I don’t even want to know what part of the body Charlie Coyle is.

Larkin is better than Pageau, sure. But how are you going to fit his presumed $8-9M AAV on this team? Pageau at $4M might not be the same type of player, but he's got defensive chops like Bergeron does, and has been a 45ish pts/82GP player while spending a ton of his time in NY with guys like Zach Parise, Josh Bailey, Kyle Palmieri, & Anthony Beauvillier on his wings. Put him with Marchand and JDB and I wouldn't be shocked to see him jump to a 60-70 point pace - he's a good player when you put him with solid players (he's leading the Isles in PP goals this season, if you're wondering how he does playing with solid players.)

    No JGP = -$4M

    Pasta $11M x 8 = $88Mil
    RFA Sway = $3M
HATH = $2MIL or not re-signed_ think: any bottom 6-holes fill w/ $1.5MIL or less (be a ton of them come draft/UFA July 1).
No Talbot. ---- > Bussi (entry level)

    In order (approx):
    -4M + -250K + -1.75M + -500K + -1.05M = almost $8MIL (Larkin) in about a 30 second effort.

Obviously a sharper pencil would figure this out for real-zee...

Seeing as OP didn't account for the $4.5M in bonus carryover for Bergeron and Krejci, you're going to need a really sharp pencil to find a way to dig up the $8M+ that Larkin will command in UFA.

Take away JGP, add the $4.5M carryover, and Boston has $48K in cap space.

Bridge Swayman at $3M AAV instead of $4.75 = $2.23M in space
    Give Pasta $11M AAV instead of $11.25M = $2.48M
Skip Hathaway, replace with $1M player = $3.63M
    Skip Talbot($1.05M), re-sign Bussi with modest $25K raise ($850K) = $3.83M

So you're still about $170K short of affording Pageau on a 22 man roster. How does Larkin get anywhere near this team at $8M+?

    Good job.

Like I said there's likely a way - current D is deep and a GRZ trade for example frees up things yadda yadda.

And after going 16W deep in the playoffs there'll inevitably be LTIR players (as per Tampa, VGN (been over CAP all year), Marchand-McAvoy IR this season etc.) to create the club of your dreams...

    Or more like NYI nightmares...

    Enjoy JG P P - he's awesome, as a 3C!

I dont think you quite understand how cap space works, and Swayman is getting more lmao. Its funny cuz youll have no problem praising him but then give him backup money.

The comp for Swayman with be knight & oettinger however Swayman has no arbitration so his only leverage is threatening to sit out. I could see him doing a 1 or 2 yr deal for $3.5

Too dependent on the teams playing in front of them. Goalies like Grubauer can be a Vezina nominee with a team like Colorado, then go to a team like Seattle and be one of the "worst" goaltenders in league. Do we really think he just forgot how to play goalie all of a sudden, or does the team in front of him have something to do with it?

Ullmark has been an average goaltender up to this point in his career. He started playing for one of the best defensive teams in the league, and looks like a superstar. Move him to a team like the Kings that have had suspect defense all season and he'd be average again.

Teams should never spend a 1st on a goaltender, in the draft or via trade. It nearly never works out.

I was replying to the guy who asked why Boston would trade for JGP when they could sign Larkin - he's the one saying you're overpaying Swayman, I was justing his hypothetical numbers to show how there's still no way that Boston could afford Larkin even if they're underpaying their guys.

saying you wouldnt pay a 1st for Shesterkin is just insane. Any pick in this draft outside the top 5 is well worth less than Shesty
