PHI says yes.

JVR probably gets a 2nd and a 3rd from a number of teams, PHI can retain up to 50% and take a cap dump, as well, which ensures this kind of return or better. This offer is slightly better than a 2nd and a 3rd, and although PHI is laden with gritty, physical guys and have alot of wingers, they lack RD behind Ronnie Attard (AHL All Star and an impressive NHL debut last year) and Ethan Samson

Minnesota would need to be getting something back to make this trade balanced.

I doubt PHI would be looking to give up picks unless it's a late one, so that's an option maybe. I think a cost-controlled asset that has the potential to fill a need for Minnesota beyond this year might be better. Could be a prospect or a depth player with some term.

I'm not too sure how the values shake out to be but I don't think Minnesota, would be in the position to end up with nothing out of this trade considering they have two more years of dead cap to survive.

Good point. I could see a depth player with term coming back since Greenway would be gone and I doubt they re-sign Reaves.

I'm of the opinion that MN shouldn't be paying for retention when they don't need it. If other teams beat their offer due to the retention premium, then so be it.

But if I'm Guerin, I'm not really interested in opening the wallet for faux value.

This is a fair trade but i dont think Philly wants/needs Greenway and his contract anyway. Spacek could be a nice player down the line. Maybe a #2 and Spacek does it.

I meant balance more in terms of risk rather than trade value. Who knows if PHI wants Greenway but it wouldn't surprise me if they did. I think Minnesota wants to move him so that they can make space for a more offensive winger like JVR but since he has no term, they probably need something other than just cap space out of this trade.

Who would you go after then, in terms of a scoring C/W who could compliment Boldy? No way BG stands pat at this trade deadline with the scoring problems this team has, and ya gotta give to get. Beyond his mediocre scoring this year, JVR has pretty good analytics.

I wouldn’t do a dam thing! This team is 4-5 players short of legitimately contending for the Cup! If they were one JVR from being legit, sure…I’d do this, but they aren’t…not even close!

Should simplify it. Greenway for JVR, straight up, no retention.

It's definitely a tough spot, to your point. But as long as they're in the hunt like this I think Guerin and Co. have to show the fans, and their superstar player who's in his prime, that they are willing to throw a chip or two in each of these years that they have the cap crunch. And JVR won't cost the kitchen sink like a Meier/Kane/O'Reilly.

I actually think Greenway for JVR is a great deal for Guerin to pull the trigger on because it completely clears Greenway's cap going forward, which the Wild need to do; it upgrades the top six, like Guerin has been reported as trying to do; it gives the appearance that the Wild are serious about "going for it", like they want the fans to believe; and it gives Boldy someone to play with again, like he desperately needs. The only downside would be if you want futures for Greenway, like a prospect or 2nd round pick, you don't get that here. But I don't think management really cares that much about that.

I just don't see them trading away Spacek for a rental after the WJC he just had.

Doing that is precisely why the Wild have been a mediocre franchise for their entire existence! It’s time to be patient for once and build a sustainably competitive team!

In a one for one trade, I would definitely do that! Not because I think JVR would add much, but because it would rid the team of Greenway…and his contract.

Yeah and you can still bill at as improving the team now because JVR is a better offensive player than Greenway. He wouldn't materially change the outcome of the season, but the fans could buy what he's selling.

Spacek's WJC definitely gave me pause for including him here, but looking at Philly's pool it looks like they need a RHD more than most anything else right now. Plus with Faber coming, and Addison already on the team (and more likely to get re-signed with Greenway's contract out of the way), I figure they could stomach it. The Wild already don't have their 3rd this year, so I think they'd be more reluctant to give up a pick.

Agreed though - regardless of Guerin's reluctance to trade for pricey rentals, I think Greenway's play and behavior this year have put him in that spot to be that piece.

I have watched the WJC for the last 10-15 years. Just look at the players that were really good in that space of time then came the NHL and they just were not good enough. Not saying that will be Spacek but possibly.

I don't think anyone thinks WJC success always equates to NHL success 1:1, but at the very least, his WJC has made him a more intriguing prospect than a throw in piece for a rental.

I think Spacek’s game will transfer to the NHL. He processes the game very fast and plays a relatively simple, defense first game.

I dont think PHI has enough interest in Greenway in a 1 for 1 trade. I also think PHI gets a 2nd and 3rd for JVR at deadline pretty easily (partly because they can retain or take a cap dump).

Im not sure Greenway gets a 2nd and 3rd. As I said above really, the main reason PHI does this trade isn;t for greenway (physical, gritty guys and wingers is one thing they dont lack), the main reason is for the RD prospect.
