Description
I would ideally be looking to land a 2C, and yeah.... Horvat is hanging there. But given his age, the money and term.it would take to get him, just not sure he is a long term fit for the Habs.

In this scenario (tied to a 2023 deadline), I have the Habs waiting a year to get that 2C.... feeling that they very well maybe on Dubois' radar. Also gives time to assess Beck and Mysak to see where they may end up in the larger picture.

As a result of this thought process, opted to clean up the blueline (Edmundson) and get a 3C short term (seeing Dvaorak there in 2024..... I would hope).

Left the goaltending tandem as is. Allen is viable, so is Montembault. There is no one on the market I would tie myself to long term honestly..... and would give Primeau some cups of coffee to see if he can be that guy.

This may not be a playoff team, but it competes. Truly about a waiting game.....

Monahan TDL 2022

OK... I know this looks nuts, but I really don't think the Isles go looking for defensive help. (Or I can say that at the time I write this).

And where adding a top 6 winger would likely be more ideal, I suspect that Lou does that in the offseason - to avoid paying crazy deadline prices.

Enter Monahan. He has has a bounce back year, worthy of 3rd line minutes. The buy in for the Isles is moving Nelson to the wing and playing Pageau as 2C. Loads the top 2 lines and still gives a 3rd line with some offensive teeth.

The two picks being moved seem to male sense. Monahan isn't going to net a 1st, even with retention, so the pair of picks is where I head.
NYI
    Panik TDL 2022

Habs pick up Panik to assist with the Isles cap.

Yeah, I can hear Habs fans going ballistic, but netting a pair of picks along with the 1st you already have...... Habs did well!

    Détails additionnels:
    TDL Drouin

Drouin is an immediate upgrade offensively over Gurianov on the 3rd line. Historically a 40-50 point producer, can give the Stars 3 legit scoring lines.

With the Stars core aging, Nill should be agressive with his deadline approach.

If my math is right, still leaves enough cap space to add a depth D.

    Détails additionnels:
    TDL Khudobin

It's hard to peg exactly what Drouin would be worth on the open market. I argue a 3rd given the recent history..... and that could be helped by moving to a non-traditional hockey market (given what I have heard).

Habs take on Khudobin, again to assist with cap space.... and given how much this frees up for the Stars, yes.... they pay..... Hence the pick flip. Asking a first outright seems too much, a 2nd not enough

    Détails additionnels:
Although in the surface the Leafs blueline looks ok, adding Edmundson gives a LD they can roll, and use Giordano as a guy to put in the line up to manage work load. Adds a physical element (although Sandin is also doing this) missing with Muzzin.

I am sure a lot of Leafs fans would suggest adding to the forward core, but they are so deep here, they can again use Marlies to fill in for injuries.

Given that the cap may remain flat, I don't see using UFA to fill this spot as an option. One year of Edmundson (and certainly an extension candidate) maybe the best use of asset and cap dollars.
    TOR
    1. Edmundson, Joel (1 750 000 $ retained)
    Détails additionnels:
The Habs LD is crowded, and given what is there, Edmundson shakes out (a weird statement, but.....)

Oddly, I don't see a lot of obvious fits around the league for Edmundson (possibly NJ if the don't resign Graves?, maybe Tampa?) and with a 10 team NTC, opted to pick a team that has a legit shot.

With retention, there is no reason why Edmundson shouldn't fetch a 1st. In fact, the Leafs may have to add a mid level prospect here.

The nuts and bolts is the 1st.
    4.
    MTL
    1. Dickinson, Jason
    Détails additionnels:
Ideally I would be seeking a 2C, but I don't see an ideal fit. What would work for me is someone on a short term with the Dubois factor the following year commiting long term to a Horvat just seems counter productive.

So, I loom for a short term 3C option, and Dickinson actually works. Sure, his tenure in Vancouver was a train wreck, but his number is Dallas and Chicago suggest he is a viable option to play 3C. 30 points off the 3rd line? I can live with that.

I get it Habs fans, Dvorak isn't a 2C, but I think there is more to be had in waiting another year to fill that void (is it Dach or Dubois or someone else?) over going long term on someone that long term I am not sure fits.

    Détails additionnels:
If the Hawks are truly in a full melt down rebuild, this is something they may entertain. A higher end 3rd for Dickinson (given what they gave to get him) is a solid return.

Leafs decline. Rielly, Sandin, giordano, benn are all capable defenceman. Leafs first round pick is far better off used other ways

Dallas passes. Not giving up a 1st for a guy that is, if anything, a very marginal upgrade over Gurianov. Neither player has looked great offensively, but Drouin hasn't scored 10 goals since 2018-2019 & can't seem to stay on the ice.

For that price, Dallas is better off just rolling with Gurianov in the top-9 and keeping their 2024 1st

-Monahan doesn't make a ton of sense for the Isles, IMO. The big-need is a top-6 winger, which arguably would cost less than a similarly productive top 6 C, which is what I assume Kent Hughes is going to be marketing Sean Monahan as. It's an interesting thought, and I don't hate the reasoning behind it, but I think it would make more sense to focus those assets more on a winger (JVR? Kuzmenko? Gustav Nyquist?) on that tier than a center. Panik's contract is also not an asset the Isles necessarily care about moving - it costs $250K in a penalty and at his point they've squirreled away enough deadline cap space to not need to worry abou tit.

-I honestly don't get this from Dallas' perpsective - Drouin has become just so unreliable I can't see them doing this, trading back from a 2024 1st to a 2024 3rd just to shed cap they don't need to move. Drouin's got 5 assists in 16 GP - is he *that* much of an upgrade over Denis Gurianov at this point?

-I could buy a fully retained Joel Edmundson getting a 1st back - you get two playoff runs out of him, and recent precedent has veteran D with playoff experience being worth that. Toronto doesn't make sense, though, because obviously their system is working with whoever they plug in on the blueline. Not the best use of their assets when even waiver guys like Connor Timmins are being productive. OK value, bad destination, in my opinion.

-I could see the Hawks biting on this, even a "resurgent" Dickinson is on pace for about a 30 point season. He's definitely rebuilt some value, though, and I don't hate this deal for either side. Keeps Montreal from having to rush a guy up for 23-24 and doesn't give up a premium asset - hell, I wouldn't be surprised if you could just get him for one of those extra 2023 4ths you've got squirreled away.

Cap space is the least of the Islanders concerns... I'd argue that their cap space is an asset right now. Even if it were, trading Panik wouldn't help anyway as his cap hit is only $250k.
