Ty Smith isn't exactly struggling. He's in the AHL this year because he's the only Pens defenseman who's exempt from waivers. He outplayed PO Joseph in the preseason and currently leads WB/S's defensemen in points. He is somewhat of a project, but he's still getting promising results.
As for the trade itself, it's essentially the same value for Comtois that we got for John Marino, which I think is a little high but not too far off.
As for the other trades, Kulikov and Shattenkirk make sense to me, assuming Buffalo isn't on Shattenkirk's NTC list. Klingberg, however, has massively underperformed and I doubt he will be getting close to a 1st and a decent prospect unless his play improves.
