As much as I like the positive thinking, Ottawa will have zero to little interest in a "Klingberg style" of D-man. They'll have zero inclination to trade 1 valuable, cost controlled asset in JBD (who's going to be either Chabot or Sandersons partner this year once he comes back from injury), let alone 2 for a UFA defenseman entering his twilight years. Ottawa is the wrong trade partner, I'm afraid.

PIT fan here- wouldn't say Smith is "struggling", more like he has no spot on our roster... Would love to acquire Comtois and believe this is a fair offering, but maybe replace the 3rd w/ a conditional 4th where the pick turns into a 3rd "IF" Comtois gets 30 points w/ PIT or something like that.... but overall good proposal.

Wouldn't say that... Joseph is more like Dumo's replacement... Smith is like a project w/ value so maybe a deal into a legitimate Top 4 D or Top 6 F (Comtois, who is still young & provides some size)

Gonna disagree here. I think the Pens would be wise to take this move sans the third. Smith for Comptois straight-up? I'd do it. POJ is Dumo's replacement, not Smith.

Ty Smith isn't exactly struggling. He's in the AHL this year because he's the only Pens defenseman who's exempt from waivers. He outplayed PO Joseph in the preseason and currently leads WB/S's defensemen in points. He is somewhat of a project, but he's still getting promising results.
As for the trade itself, it's essentially the same value for Comtois that we got for John Marino, which I think is a little high but not too far off.

As for the other trades, Kulikov and Shattenkirk make sense to me, assuming Buffalo isn't on Shattenkirk's NTC list. Klingberg, however, has massively underperformed and I doubt he will be getting close to a 1st and a decent prospect unless his play improves.

Buffalo and Ottawa aren't going to be playoffs team. But if by miracle they are, wouldn't they just go with the guys would made this great push into the playoffs? Fact is Shatternkirk and Klingberg just aren't good NHL Dmen.

I like Smith, but Anaheim is in no position to trade a middle six, physical winger for yet another defenseman. They'll continue the current path of seeing if Benoit and Vaakaneinen can figure it out while the next wave of youth (Mintyukov, Zellweger, etc) progress through the system.

Eh, it's fine if it doesn't make sense. I just don't think their values are that different.

Absolutely, the value I have no problem with. It just comes down to team needs.
