Description
With the news from Dhaliwal that the Canucks camp offered Horvat just under $8mil, I think its fair to say that he's not re-signing in Vancouver. This offer makes the most sense to me.

Not that think Horvat will get more or maybe just a bit more as a UFA, gotta think Horvat has had enough with Canucks and will seek greener , no better pastures as UFA.
Same with the Canucks, Wouldn't signing Horvat at 2.5m more than he makes now be pointless. Just paying a guy more, and the Canucks would still be a middling team at best.

Horvat is a pure rental in Colorado, They've less than $12,000,000 to sign 10 players. I've a feeling that Horvat will test free agency. And he will be only a rental.

I'm saying he is getting traded because he has no intention of resigning with Canucks. I'm sure Miller hates himself for resigning when he knew the only reason he did was for long term security. Not that I blame him for resigning, but if this year has been frustrating for Miller, imagine the next eight years.

Jets fan here hoping that nobody gives colorado anything to fill that hole so well lol. Damn that’s a stacked squad when healthy, only chance come playoff time is win a depth battle or one hot tender, possibly physical. But if it turns into a special teams battle, pack your bags home and get ready for summer

Miller has always been absolutely brutal on defence. Should've traded him last year at the deadline. I have less faith in this management group than Jim Benning and John Weisbrod. Rutherford will still be threatening that "there will be consequences" in 2030.

Offering Horvat 7Mx8 gives him the same amount of money as Miller. 8M +/- 0.25M should be enough for an extension. If he would prefer to listen to other offers then its a different story.

Dhaliwal said Canucks offered Horvat the most they were willing to give him, just under 8 million. Now they'll take the best offer on him.

So the most sensible move is for COL to trade their top forward prospect, top d prospect and there only pick in the first 5 rounds of two drafts for a guy they have zero chance of re-signing because the cap you know exists. COL isn’t doing that.

These Horvat to Colorado trades always make sense for Vancouver, never for Colorado.

For col, horvat would be a rental. these discussions make more sense if there is a distinction between horvat's rental v. extension potential trade price, and distinction between the teams that would be interested in horvat as a rental v. w/an extension.

COL usually doesn’t chase expensive rentals, see last year. Horvat rental comp is Giroux, maybe, and that was a fraction of this. This is bad for COL on every level

yes, regarding col, horvat is a rental - which is not the OP's trade - but is the more sensible conversation - what would that value be w/giroux as a comp? (tho horvat has no trade protection) ... whether or not col would do that ... am doubtful. on the one hand, the last year of the MacK 6.3 deal (and PLB who is one of the more clued into col's fo has been beating this drum), on the other, so few assets in the pipeline already ... col has a smart-patient fo, rarely trades firsts unless backed against the wall, and made a point of not chasing rentals last year as you mention ...

COL intention was to play Newhook at 2C between Landeskog and Nichushkin, primarily because they think Newhook can be 2C. That didn’t happen because of injuries and then the injuries got out of hand. They haven’t played a single game not missing someone from the top 6 or top 4 and more often missing multiple guys out of both. COL is going to treat their own guys coming back like trade acquisitions as they will be getting guys back for the next 2 months probably. Any move they do make will be minor or for somebody that is under contract for multiple seasons. Horvat doesn’t fit that profile.

I'll reference this again from a sensible Vancouver hockey writer:

Basically, in any trade involving Horvat, young players (25 and under), high-end prospects or draft picks have to be included.

Of course, like I mentioned off the top, an extension would have to be negotiated as part of the deal or none of the above players will be available. I don’t think Sakic and MacFarland would risk losing premium assets for a player that could get up and leave at the end of the playoffs. Stranger things have happened, but the Avs’ front office doesn’t strike me as a group that would spend a lot on a rental, even it’s someone as valuable as Horvat.

He mentions the first in '23 plus ONE of Behrens, Olausson or Girard for Horvat WITH an extension. People thinking Horvat as a rental gets two or even three of those pieces are to my mind deluded but stranger things happen at sea I guess.
