Vancouver. Pettersson is out producing marner and plays the much more valuable position, why do this?

The Canucks probably say no just because Pettersen is a C (although he's not that great in the circle) even if they viewed Marner as the better player now. In my eyes, they should technically just be able to put Horvat + Miller down the middle. There is the possibility of turning Marner into a C too. Either way, they would still have trouble signing Horvat, with Marner's contract, and therefore it's not really viable. Petterson also has the better shot from the too.

The Leafs might be tempted by the lower cap hit, but they probably decline since Marner is important in the locker room and the chemistry that he has with the players in the Leafs top 6. He also has a better track record, and they definitely view him as the better player.

They both can play PK and PP, so nothing is lost in terms of roles, although I think they have different roles on the PP. The same amount of team control, except Petterson can be signed as an RFA and he's a year younger. Their next contracts are probably going to be similar in AAV.

Both teams say no.

Vancouver. If they had the same AAV and expiry status, maybe there's an argument. As things stand, a really easy call.

Vancouver says no. Pettersson is cheaper and plays a more valuable position. Canucks also already have a surplus of wingers and a weakness in centre depth, the last thing they need is to move a centre for another winger.

Vancouver doesn't do it, but Pettersen is hardly out-producing Marner. Pettersen only has 1 more point, although he has played one less game.

I mean it’s just a true statement. With marner’s point streak I assumed he’d be comfortably ahead making this a more interesting question, but he’s not which makes the whole thing moot

It is a true statement but if we were being precise Pettersson is slightly out producing Marner.

If Marner continues his streak for an extended period, he could end up getting ahead by a comfortable amount. However, Pettersson currently has a 3-game streak himself and is getting them in bunches

My point though was that mentioning production on the season was a moot point as you said now, since in any given day the one who is leading could change.

Not in a million years would Leafs ever trade Marner for Peterson; really really off the scale ridiculous imo. Position value is overrated - Marner is by far the better player, everything else is noise.

What is Marner better at than Pettersson?

Without sounding controversial, - because Peterson is a good player- Marner is a top 10 player (top 15 at worst) - and he’s better at pretty much everything only exception goals.
Production (career ppg) - Marner 1.07 vs Pet 0.937
Playmaking (primary assists last year & this) - Marner 36, 11 vs Pet 20,10
Goals - Marner 0.327 gpg career, 11 this year vs Pet 0.4, 13
Marner is an elite PK, I don’t watch the Canucks that often so maybe pet is? Don’t know which advanced stat can prove who is better?
All the advanced stats I can access indicate Marner is superior in every metric - xgf%, hdcf%, etc.
Marner is a two time first team nhl all star. I can’t see Paterson ever making even 3rd team nhl all star in his entire career, but 🤷. But we do know he has not come close to that level yet.

I get the whole position argument centre > dman > winger but it’s overplayed imo. subjectively speaking - in the last decade at least 3 wingers are top 10 - Ovie, PK88 & Kuch. They were more valuable than 99.9% of centres that were their peers. In current day - I’d place Kuch, Marchand, Panarin, Marner & Kaprizov in top 15 players in league. Peterson might fit somewhere between 30-50?

Wait natural stattrick lets you compare players, 5v5 or pp or pk - great site for advanced metrics.
This year & last Marner for the most part has the better numbers (CF%, FF%, HDCF%) xGA% is the same. Marner has also played >2x the minutes on PK

Go look them up yourself; take a break from dreaming about how good Petey (or Bo or Kuzmenko) are tears of joy. Last year it was Miller and Demko and Hoglander tears of joy . It’s not healthy to live in a world of perpetual make believe - you canuckle fans need some splashes of reality once in a while. The truth can set you free
