Description
I wonder if Flames fans would do this?

Everyone saying Monahan has no value because Habs were paid a 1st to take him on.

Personally there is NO WAY I do this deal as a Habs fan, but I wanted to know what Flames fans think

Maybe wait till after the season before asking this. It’s too early, and a lot can happen.

20 games is good for monahan, but sven andrighetto has 16 points in 19 games for the avs once a upon a time, lighting in a bottle does happen for short stints. It’s best to let things play out before jumping to conclusion on someone on small sample sizes

I’d prefer Stanley Cup Champion Kadri locked up rather than just our 1st Round Pick back, since come the end of this season, Monahan becomes a Free Agent and probably signs down in CLB or in TOR for super cheap. Maybe he stays in MTL too, who knows

Happy for Monahan, but no regrets here

IMO the Flames have dug themselves a hole. Committing seven years to Kadri, and nine years for Huberneau. Would it have been better to keep Monahan for one year, Huberneau for one year and have 17.5m in cap space next summer and the first rounder too.

Gotta love this site - in the summer it was all - "Oh good trade but only if they can sign those guys" - now it's - " well they signed them for way too long, why didn't they just lock up the second highest scorer in the NHL last year for only 4 or 5 years - that is what I would have done" 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I said last summer...it was a bad extension, but it was good trade for Calgary. One year Huberneau and Weager and first for one year Tkachuk
Weager was fair extension but rather have Huberneau for one season instead of starting a new eight contract at age 30.

That’s what it takes to sign a Star, especially in Calgary

We’re having a tough time signing & keeping Top Talent (especially American’s) in Calgary: Dougie Hamilton, Adam Fox, Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau for example

This will only continue to happen and probably even more so as a result of the Covid restrictions our Governments put in place

I really won’t be surprised if/when Noah Hanifin or Matthew Coronato decide to sign back down in the States as well

FWIW - I think Kadri is gonna hit his stride over the next 20 games.

C.mon that ain't right. Funny how fans are so pissed when one of their UFAs leave, but are never upset when they sign other teams UFAs.
Flames have Markstrom, Tanev, Coleman and Zakorov. signed as UFAs from other teams

You're better off not having Hamilton at 9m, instead you get good assets back in a trade. Fox? He was never yours to sign. It was known he was going the college UFA and wanted to sign with Rangers.
Tkachuk, He let be known, 7 years as Flame was enough....he was leaving. Same with Gaudreau. Gee, the "attraction" that playing your whole career with the team drafted you, isn't that realistic .
UFAs just be definition come and go....from all teams. Good GMs just find good value with the cap in finding players...bad ones don't.

I will admit that many Americans, especially from the East probably don't want to in western Canada. But geez at look at all the Western Conference and many teams have much worse travel schedules than just about any team in the East. UFAs, who are generally older may have wives and children and time away (flying in airplanes) isn't appealing.

Of those, only Coleman is American and he too was signed at a premium and given term to do so, which is my point and what’s required to secure Unrestricted Free Agents in Calgary

Europeans & Canadiens are much easier to keep. Markstrom & Tanev went to the highest bidder and we traded for Zadorov. Many weren’t happy with the Tanev signing at the time and felt he was given too much term and money at the time too.

We Drafted and therefore retained Fox’s rights which essentially became useless when he refused to sign with us.

My general position and opinion is that Americans are more difficult to retain and sign when approaching or hitting UFA status but it really applies to everyone.

It’s not necessarily a level playing field across the board in the NHL and many States provide Tax, Climate and Lifestyle advantages, so unless you have players wanting to play with McDavid or think a certain Canadian Team will get them a Stanley Cup, Canadian Teams will have to pay a premium to sign Star UFA’s, especially those of the American variety
