Why is Carolina trading it's backup goalie for a pick 3 drafts from now?

It wouldn’t be ideal to trade Raanta, but I highly doubt that if Toronto offered that for Raanta, Canes would be hard pressed not to accept. If that were to happen, I think they would look at one of Dobby or Reimer to reacquire as a backup.

We’re just gonna ignore the fact it’s a first rounder?

3 drafts from now they're in win now mode easy pass for Waddell. Just as you're ignoring they are serious Cup Contenders and aren't going to give up the now for a probable late first to submarine their present.

That Sharks trade is just silly. Our 1st round picks are not going to be traded.

Lol. No GM in the right mind is going to turn down an offer on his rental backup for a freaking first round pick.

Even if you want to stick to your “win now” argument, you can flip the first for a better player.

How many better backup goalies are available ZERO DUMB TRADE. If it's so easy to get a better goalie with that pick why don't you?

Forget it, you clearly have no concept of the value of first round picks.

A late first 3 drafts away is a lottery ticket a decent one but a lottery ticket none the less. You don't give up a guy you may seriously need on a cup run. Teams give up first all the time to make Cup runs. it's you who clearly over values it.

Tell me a team that gave one of the best backups in the league they had for a 1 3 drafts away When their starter has the injury history of Freddie Anderson? Especially when they are a very strong Cup Contender.

They decline swiftly and hard. I've been saying all year last year and this off-season that Zucker is a very good hockey player who had bad luck and just needs to get healthy. This trade makes the Pens worse. Pens should not move Zucker at this point.

When you are this close to a possible Cup you add now not futures. That first may do something 5-6 years from now come on use your head for something other than a hat rack.

Sharks aren’t retaining almost $20 mil and taking Murray back while giving up two likely top 10 1st rounders

Pens decline. 2 Ahl players and a 2nd for Zucker 50% retained who has been fantastic so far this season and Friedman who should be in the nhl but the pens just don’t have the cap space. No thanks.

If goaltending so your concern, flip that pick for a better goalie. Varlomov for example. It’s not a hard concept. Canes take this 11 times out of 10.

If that pick is so easily flippable for Varlamov if he's better why doesn't Toronto do it Stop this is assinine for Carolina. You don't risk a Cup run for an asset that won't reasonably do anything for 5-6 years UTTERLY FOOLISH dumb decisions like that gets GMS FIRED

Clearly unless Toronto management is completely incompetent if that pick gets a "better goalie" wtf isn't Toronto doing that?

Of course Toronto would rather trade that 1st for Varlomov. Actually scratch that, Toronto would rather not trade a first for any rental goalies, period. It’s a ridiculous notion and to pretend that it’s somehow a deal that favours Toronto is stupid.

I think it's in a bad trade for both in some respects is Ranta worth a 1this year no but time decreased value. A 1 3 years from now isn't worth potentially throwing away a Cup run. Anderson goes down round 2 would you rather have Ranta or whoever is number 3 in Carolina right now with your season riding on it?

Obviously Raanta, but if this trade was offered you could flip the first for a better goalie then Raanta.

No I don't think so if it was that easy again why wouldn't Toronto do it ? There is zero intellectual logic in your argument.
Edit: making a trade that forces you to make another is a bad idea. You're putting yourself in a position of having to rely on someone else that's how GM's get Fleeced.
