Depends on where Vancouver is. I agree that I don’t think cbj is in a contending position but adding Gaudreau just made your window a lot sooner, and adding a 99 point forward like Miller might be the piece you need to make a serious run. Plus you’re not even giving up players like Johnson, Boqvist, jiricek, or sillinger in this deal which leaves you plenty of upcoming talent.
I'm also hesitant with Miller. Not just age, but outside of his short stint in VAN, he doesn't have a history as a high-end producer that would warrant this kind of package, or possibly the contract he signs.
Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy with Miller; but, I'm largely in agreement with
@ajp_18 - unless Miller's price comes down (both in trade and in contract value), I don't prefer it to happen, nor see it happening. GMJK just went through a
short hell to shed cap for Laine, and I'm not sure he's going to wade back into it immediately absent a good deal. The salary cap will still be flat(ter) next year, and Miller's market is likely not going to be as big as he wants, simply by virtue of the lack of cap teams will have (i.e. Kadri 2.0, if not worse). If he makes it there, I think there is a good chance he'd give CBJ consideration - moves closer to home, young team on the rise with an opening window, chance to play with JG.
But; even with Miller, CBJ's ability to compete in the future doesn't boil down to trading for/signing big name players now; it comes down to how well Johnson, Sillinger, Jiricek, Marchenko, et al. and, yes, even CC develop in the next year or two (the kid was one of the best D-men in the NCAA during the second half of the season). After hoarding as much short term talent as we could before losing Panarin, we already know the organization doesn't have the appetite to go through that again.
