If AAV is the theme, it makes sense. Otherwise, the longer the contracts are, the worse it is.
Let's say player A has a $6M cap hit for one more season and plays at like a $2M player. That's $4M in total negative value.
Player B has a cap hit of $5M for two more seasons and plays like a $2.5M player. That's $2.5M x 2 years which is $5M in negative value. Player B has the worse contract. This is why most players with one year left on their deals don't have the worst contract on their teams.
