Isles 2022-23 - Return of an Old Friend

Description
This is mostly unlikely, but a fun scenario I thought of.

Back in 2014-15, the Isles "kid" line at the time was Lee-Nelson-Strome. I always thought Lee and Nelson have shown really nice chemistry, even though they're both goal scorers. Strome, who was the playmaker on that line, had a very nice season. In my opinion, he played equally as well with Lee and Nelson as he did with Tavares (and I think Kulemin was on the left side?). I think Capuano killed Strome's confidence and a coach like Lambert might give him a better role here. There's also very scarce depth at RW in free agency. Everyone is either too old or will be too expensive.

That being said, I'd only want Strome back if he's willing to take a one-year, prove-it deal on a contender. He most likely will get a larger contract somewhere else, but it'll probably be on a bad team.

Trades

SEA-NYI Trade

Beauvillier for Dunn straight up seems like a fair deal. Maybe pieces add on both sides but the general framework makes a lot of sense. Dunn essentially takes on the Toews/Leddy role we desperately need, while Beau gives Seattle a young linemate for Beniers and has existing chemistry with Eberle.

NSH-NYI Trade

Cap dump move for both teams in an odd way. Nashville gets two forwards, one veteran (Bailey) and one project (Bellows). Bellows and Cody Glass were junior teammates and seemed to have great chemistry with one another, that could be a fun line to recreate in Nashville. They also move on from Myers, who was very disappointing. NYI saves some cap and gets a depth defenseman and forward (Oliver).

---

Free Agents

Domi

Max Domi also signs a one-year, prove-it deal. I think Domi would be an incredible fit with Barzal and Wahlstrom. He's faster than Lee so he can keep up with Barzal, and also is physical enough to protect Barzal and Wahlstrom.

Varlamov

In this scenario, NYI also gets to keep Varlamov. Looking at the goaltending market, and how the playoffs have played out, I really want to keep this tandem together unless we can get a decent backup at super cheap.

Greene

Andy Greene comes back as the 7th defenseman.

Someone very stupid is gonna give Ryan Strome a lot of years and a lot more money than that. Wouldn’t be opposed, though, at that price

I can't see NSH trading for a big money, multi-year contract dump like Bailey when they have Jeannot, Carrier, and Fabbro to sign the following season. Maybe if it was just a 1-year deal, but the 2nd year just complicates things.

Like your analysis but unless Strome and Domi have no better offers, I can't see them settling for just one year prove it contracts.

Makes total sense. I figured taking Myers back would help. Is there something else NYI can take back for Nashville to take Bailey?

I think Domi won't get more than a two-year deal from anyone. He hasn't gotten anything longer than that his entire career and he hasn't proven he deserves more since his 72-point season.

Strome, you're probably right, as I mentioned above. Some bad team will offer him a six-year deal with a $5.5M cap hit. More power to him if he wants that, but he'd have a really nice role on NYI in this scenario.

I think the idea is that Nashville would want to add some
middle six scoring if Forsberg leaves.

I suppose a lot depends on whether they re-sign Forsberg, as he would take up a sizeable amount of NSH's cap-- but I'm just not sure NSH is the right team either way. Their whole philosophy over the past couple of seasons has been to get younger, cheaper, bigger, and tougher; I don't see Bailey fitting that image. I don't dislike him, just not sure NSH is a fit. I saw an ANA post with a Bailey trade today-- it was an overpay by NYI to dump him, but I still think there is potential in a deal there.

Using up $5M worth of cap space on Bailey just makes it harder for NSH to afford a top six player that can produce 30+ goals - whether that's Forsberg or someone else.

Hard to find 30 goal scorers. Bailey gets a lot of hate but he can add value to ur team.

There will be UFAs like Forsberg, Nichushkin, Tkachuk on the market this summer. Players under contract like Miller, Patrnak, DeBrincat could be available. Fitting in any of those guys gets a little harder for NSH, with Bailey on the books. And like @villenash said above, Bailey doesn't really fit NSH's current identity. I don't see the Preds having interest in either player you're offering them here.

Yeah, my bad - you have the same profile pic as the OP wink

I'd prefer keeping Olivier over taking a flyer on Bellows. Olivier didn't get much of a chance with NSH this past season, but he has the physicality Hynes loves. Worked well on a line with Sissons and Trenin previously too, if NSH decides to move Jeannot into the top six full time.

Nice GMing! Appreciate finding one where Seattle is offered a decent hockey deal, as opposed to just trying to dump their latest cast-off, cap dump, or pariah for draft picks!

I like Beauvellier. Could work, though I really wonder if Francis would move Dunn in a deal like this. (?) I honestly think he will hang on to Seattle's top assets and try to move one or more of them at next years deadline in a package for another '23 1st Rounder.
