Here's what I wonder: wouldn't Leafs fans rather trade the Marner contract? You could bring in two really good players for his cap hit that would help the team a lot. I don't really follow the leafs but, on the surface, I'd rather keep Nylander and trade Marner to some team that needs to put points on the board and will give up a lot to do that.

Marner is an absolute superstar, I would much rather trade Nylander. The two players we would get for Marner's contract wouldn't even be half as good as Marner. For example say we trade him and sign Rakell and Nichushkin to replace him, we are a far worse team.

I guess missing the playoffs is more preferred in New Jersey

Everyone would walk from New Jersey, you just never going to trade for players? Nylander has 2 years left, I'm sure that's enough time to convince him to stay.

There are so many solid wingers on the market, I don’t know why anyone would pay anything close to this

I rather keep the pick and all the other pieces. Nylander is good but he only has two years left on his contract. There are wingers available this offseason who we can get for much cheaper than this who can produce similar to Nylander. Keeping the pick to draft a guy like Nemec, Jiricek, etc on ELC along with keeping Sharangovich would be a better idea for the Devils

Yeah but once you list the ones that want to play for New Jersey suddenly there's no wingers

If we trade Nylander to sign Rakell and Nichuskin we are also a worse team. Point per game star player, don't know what more you can really ask for from a 7M player.

This has become the lamest excuse on this site. “Oh my team wouldn’t trade for that player because they could just leave as a UFA when the time comes “.. no shiit. Every player could. At that point why are trades a thing? Hell why sign a UFA or draft a player? They’re just gonna leave when they become a UFA.

Relax. You get 2 years to work on an extension with a player and then you have the advantage of being able to offer something that other teams can’t - the extra year.

Stop being bias and stop trying to find negative in everything. The game is a business, trades happens. There’s risks in every move, you weigh them and determine if it’s worth the risk or not. & if you think it’s not worth the risk of Nylander for this package then you’re absolutely insane.

Interesting that the Leafs can trade 13m in cap (four players) and take back just 8m (three players). And the Leaf get picks too? Really a one side trade in the Leafs favour.
And after all that, even with Muzzin magically appearing on LTIR.....it's still not cap compliant.

I get what you're saying but he's been held in check the past few playoffs so wouldn't you rather have more depth? Toronto can afford to lose one superstar if it improves the rest of their team, can't they? I know they maybe aren't quite as top-heavy as they used to be so maybe it doesn't matter as much these days. Anyhow, thanks for the thoughts.
