Never heard that. The staal trade was excellent. If Detroit wanted Nemeth we would have resigned him. He's on a bloated contract for 2 more years after this. If his deal was over after this season the trade would be fine.

Not sure we'd trade two thirds in the same draft for Reaves, especially since he's signed for only one more year, but he's clearly a guy we'd be interested in adding.

The firsts are nice, but the remainder of the filler would need to be swapped out and replaced with Schneider to get the Jets talking.

This offer doesn't give Winnipeg a single needed or desired piece, outside the firsts, so that makes it very easy for Winnipeg to turn down without discussion.

Staal was a 2nd for one year. Nemeth has two more years on his contract so by that metric the compensation for taking him off your hands should be two 2nds. Detroit would still decline though, Staal's a better defender.

I for one fully expect any Scheifele return to be underwhelming. BUT, I also expect there to be a main piece coming back that has T4D or T6C potential. The above really doesn’t address any of that. (Fully understanding Nils potential, but we have enough small offensive dmen, we don’t want any more, hence the demand for Schneider).
