Description
The signings are pretty much placeholder players to play until the young guys are ready and then the placeholders can be flipped at the deadline for more picks.

Monahan has really fallen off a cliff the past two years, so Montreal can afford to take on his hefty final year of his contract and get a little sweetener to take it. If he plays well you can probably flip him 50% retained for a bigger return at the deadline.

    1. Khudobin, Anton

    1. Petry, Jeff
    Détails additionnels:
Try to trade Petry somewhere and hopefully get his full salary off the books. You might need to take another teams bad contract for a no salary retained trade to work. Not specifically Dallas but they might be a team who would be (foolishly) interested

    1. Weber, Shea
    Détails additionnels:
They might have interest in Weber to get to the cap floor. Don’t know what an exact return would look like, but a late round pick might be most likely.

    1. Allen, Jake
    Détails additionnels:
Oilers have had interest in Allen for awhile and if they can’t find a decent goalie in free agency for a good price they might consider addressing that need via trade. The return could vary, but this might be around how much he gets traded for.
    6.
    EDM
    1. Hoffman, Mike
    Détails additionnels:
Two struggling players on the same AAV in a one for one swap. MTL might lose this trade but at the very least Monahan should be able to replace Hoffman’s current production.

EDM's seconds are tied up in conditional moves so they can't move their second for Allen. If that's all Petry can get, then the Habs keep him, IMO. Happy with the Armia and Weber trades though it sucks to not have Webs around. Happy with the Monahan deal but would hope to get a little extra for giving CGY all that relief.

All in all, for a Leaf fan this isn't too bad grin

If Allen continues to play the way he has since coming back from injury, he's going for no less than a second.

Fair enough. Can’t blame me for trying! He is a good goalie.. was just wondering what people would say.

I thought the Oilers were acquiring him with Kulak but I was wrong

Definitely no to trade 1 2 and 6.

I think you will see trades 3 and 4 combine to arizona.

Yah I thought we were going to get either Allen, or Reimer. I guess that will have to be a off-season move. We just need a good cheap goalie preferably under 3-3.5M, as we are so close to the cap. I don’t see a guy like Ullmark, or Varlamov coming over, so we may be forced to try and get Reimer or Allen.

Barrie isn't struggling, he has 30 points in 56 games this season while being +3.43 GF% Rel. Edmonton declines that trade easily.

As for Allen, the Oilers don't have any room for him ad they already have Smith and Skinner under contract for next season. Plus I don't know why they'd want another backup, they need a starter quality player.

Barrie is a liability defensively and most of his points are secondary assists so it kind of balances out . If Edmonton rejects that’s fine, it would just be a change of scenery type move.

In terms of the Edmonton goalie situation, you’re going to need a decent goalie like Allen if you want to win a round or two in the playoffs. The goalie market this Free Agency isn’t great and Edmonton is right against the cap so getting Allen makes sense. Smith is an aging third string goalie at this point with his play and injuries and Skinner isn’t good enough to be an NHL starter. Allen would make sense for Edmonton in terms of its an upgrade of what they have and the cost isn’t massive.

What? A 4 game sample where he went 1-1-2 with 2 quality starts and 3 GAA isn't changing his value.

GAA is mainly a stat to show if the whole team is doing well with you as the goalie. Don’t look at that when you look at a goalie that is on a trash team. Vejmelka’s GAA is horrible too, as it should be. If you don’t have any help, it’s going to be bad. Same as the wins, loss, OTL. If the team is bad, it is hard to win games. SV% is the main one you should look at when it comes to goalies on bad teams in my opinion.

In the comment you responded to, I noted that Barrie has a +3.43 GF% Rel, which means the Oilers are better at outscoring their competition when he's on the ice than when he's off.

His -0.2 GA/60 Rel tells me that Edmonton allows fewer goals when Barrie is on the ice too. So no, he's not a defensive liability.

    Unlike Drouin.

Allen has gone past the 1st round just once in his career, and that was 6 seasons ago. He's not going to lead any team anywhere in the playoffs.

Also, why the dig at Skinner? He's been better than Allen this season. Among goalies that have played at least 12 games, Skinner ranks 23 by GSAx/60 while Allen ranks 41st. The Oilers would be better of re-signing #39 Koskinen than trading for Allen, especially when you consider the assets you think he's worth.

    https://moneypuck.com/goalies.htm

It's funny, Skinner is younger than Carter Hart and has produced better results at the NHL level this season. Yet you discount him completely.

My main point was that looking at a cherry picked 2-game sample size is not going to give you a good idea of a player's ability or value.

No, but he will play more this year. Also, he’s been solid for this whole season. I would love to have a goalie that is making under 3M if Smith retires, but we will see what Holland does. Allen is a decent goalie honestly.

The conditions on their 2nd-round picks will be resolved by the offseason, and unless they make the Finals this year, the picks can be traded. They'd just have to find a way to move Mike Smith before trading for Allen, but the picks likely won't be an issue
