What is that Giroux salary. He won't take a pay cut to go to an rebuilding team even if that's the Habs. He'll go to a contending team that will offer term.

Yeah, because with Doughty, Roy, Durzi and Walker on the roster, and Clarke and Faber coming up, what we need is an aging, overpriced RD.

You can get better returns for both those players. LA value is close at least but still think there would be another piece depending on the pro scouts evaluation of Grans

Yes, the other piece would be Caufield going to LA.

34 year old defenseman with 4 more years on his contract. Who has put up 1/3 of his goal total from last year, 1/4 of his point total from last season, significant drop in possession numbers, and likely not interested in spending his remaining years in a rebuild situation. In what world do you think that the Habs have an upper hand in trading Petry?

Because NHL GMs are smart enough to know that 30 games out of one season isn't how you judge a player. He has been back to his normal since MSL took over the bench. He wasn't happy and it showed in his play. He has been back to his normal self though and top 4 RHD don't come cheap.

Unless you're Toronto fans trading for Matt Roy. In which case you can get him for Dermott and a 2nd.

Agree with most of this, but in a league where nearly half the teams are using LTIR to be cap compliant, and the cap isn’t expected to raise much if at all in the next few years long contracts can positively and negatively impact values. 34yr olds that have struggled don’t have increased value

If you want a first and a high prospect for Petry he needs to show he has been as good as you say for a season and then flip him, if you aren't concerned that his play will slip, sell him next season.

As for the Kings there is zero fit, maybe for a team that sees their compete window closing, but to me that contract will be an albatross in years to come. The Kings are not fully in win-now mode after just leaving a rebuild, in addition the Kings are stacked at RD. NHL active RDs: Doughty, Roy, Walker, and DurziNHL Prospects: Clarke, Faber, Grans, and Spence coming. Adding Petry blocks the path of our younger players and trends the Kings older (something they have tried to move away from over the past 3 seasons)

I don't think he has increased value, if this was last off season they likely get even more then this but now this is likely the high end of his value. Maybe a team desperate gives up something more or Habs retain some to get more but even in this cap world he likely gets a pretty good return as long as he keeps playing like he has been.

He has been this good for the last four years, he doesn't have to prove anything to get this return. You're right it doesn't make sense for the King's but a first and good prospect will be the ask from any team for Petry.

His value is lower because it's known he wants to go to an American team and he has not had a good season, but at least look at it in context.

Highest defensive zone deployment and lowest shooting rate in 6 years. A team that struggled to defend or produce offense for the majority of the season as a group under Ducharme. The 31st ranked PP in the league. 3rd-5th string goaltenders throughout the season. Missing his primary defensive partner for the entire season on top of other significant man games lost, including Weber who would normally lighten Petry's load.

You can debate value and fit, but this is far from a usual season or baseline for his production moving forward.

No one is arguing Petry is set to be a bad player or that he couldn't bounce back.

But at around 33-34, defensemen start to trend downwards, save a few exceptions. Petry at 34 with 4 remaining years on his contract makes any team and their fan base a bit reluctant to make such a move due to declining play and injury issues.

For the Kings in particular in the past 5 years they traded Jake Muzzin (now 33 and having significant injury issues) and Alec Martinez (now 34 and also having similar injury issues), and bought out Dion Phaneuf (significant downgrade in play at around 30-33 and out of the NHL).

Taking on Petry's contract is a risk, and any GM worth his salt realizes that they can get him for a discount for this reason, paired with his struggles this season.

That's different than his goals, points, and possession numbers being down. It's not as worrisome if you look beyond raw numbers, which any team will do.

Here is the ranking of points leaders by defensemen over the age of 32 for this season: Letang (6), Burns (13), Goligoski (41), Giordano (48), Ryan Suter (63), Erik Johnson(75), Braun (92), Jeff Petry (117), Anton Strålman (125), Nick Holden (124), Alexander Edler (135), Marc Staal (145), Marc-Edouard Vlasic (153), Andy Greene (158), Jack Johnson (161), Zdeno Chara (164), Jordie Benn (204), Kris Russell (211) .

The point I'm trying to make is that offense first defensemen don't have an exceptionally long shelf life, and when they do their numbers tend to go lower as they get older.

Don't even think I have to wish you guys luck, Byfield is a stud, scorers up and down the wings and a veteran core that will lead them in the right direction. Have fun watching them on the back up the mountain

I think the Avs would have to consider that offer at that price, though they'd have to make some moves cap-wise.
