Rumor has it that while Smith was on LTIR and Koskinen struggling, the Oilers offered a 5th or 6th round pick for Jones. At this point, I suspect the window of opportunity for a deal is closing. Ken Holland's gamble has been on Mike Smith's health and Koskinen's ability to back Smith up. The results of that bet speak for themselves, and in my mind the best answer is a third veteran goaltender rather than moving Koskinen. However, the Oilers are right up against the salary cap and will need to move a contract in order to take on another one. Under the circumstances, they are going to be hard pressed to address just one of their needs and so are likely to lean toward acquiring that defenseman and continuing the gamble on Smith staying healthy. I suspect Holland is looking for a buyer for Tyson Barrie, perhaps Devin Shore, and maybe Slater Koekkoek. I think those are three contracts that are moveable because each guy is now redundant in Edmonton and the salaries are commensurate with the talent and skills of the players.
