Description
Day one million of asking Dave Tippett to take a hike. Bring up Woodcroft and Manson, fire our goalie coach. Holland can stuff himself any day now too.

A comment in my previous AGM stirred me to thought: small changes won't enough to keep Edmonton in the dance against Colorado and Vegas and the poor showing last night against those same Eichel-less Golden Knights only served to exacerbate the chasm that still exists between the two teams. What I really noticed - beyond just the systems stuff - is just how much Edmonton's back end pales in comparison. It was something we knew all along, I don't think anyone was fooling themselves, but it's a greater gap than I had been giving credence to.

It'll take addition, subtraction, and addition via subtraction, but something needs to come together pronto in order to rectify how piss-poor the Oilers have been since taking McDavid first overall. If Colorado and Vegas can answer in waves with the ilk of Toews-Makar, Byram-Girard, McNabb-Pietrangelo, or Martinez-Theodore, what can Edmonton do in response? Names like Kuemper and Lehner have been in the upper echelon for goaltenders for a while now, what can Edmonton bring to the table to match?

Chychrun's name has been thrown around. Hart may or may not be available. Damn the acquisition costs, winning is all that matters now.

Smith's cooked and it'll continue to show tonight versus the Hawks. Running Barrie and Bouchard on the same team continues to be nonsensical: if you must have a player that can't play defense, at least let it be one that can score.

Quintessential top line. Should absolutely throttle all opposition. Second line is a bit MacGyver: Benson is probably the second-best passer on the team and could give Draisaitl a run for his money in that department. Pair that duo with a man known for being a triggerman and nothing else. The third line is what our second line defers to when Draisaitl and McDavid are paired. It'll dominate bottom-of-the-roster competition. This fourth line is in reality Edmonton's current third line. It's the deepest set of forwards in the league. All they've been missing is proper utilization.

This blueline setup aims to take the loads off of Nurse and Bouchard: Braun's a horse and Chychrun is the best player available in a trade today. It essentially gives Edmonton the same "two top-pairs" look that Colorado and Vegas are running. Keith has been solid of late, and he and Ceci can overperform in a hold-the-fort third pair role (this has been the second pair for most, if not all, of the season). Give Dave Manson the keys to this setup and the Norris one day finds its way to Edmonton.

So long as Dustin Schwartz ceases behind the bench, Hart and Sinner (behind the strongest blueline either man has had at the NHL level) will show you why they dominated the WHL.

Figure the cap out in the summer. Moving Foegele becomes an option with this setup (replace with Holloway), maybe Hoffman becomes a casualty, and affording Kane long-term is likely a pipe dream unless Keith retires. Win the cup and he might.

I'd take that deal anytime, clears up a spot on the wings and add at a position of need, especially if Petry is dealt.

Before making these types of moves I’d rather see the coaching change.

Yep,but barrie is pretty bad defensively, and the last thing we need is a player who is bad defensively and hangs our goalie out to dry

I doubt Arizona would want 1st rounders from 2 and 3 seasons from now. Also this team is still far behind the other top teams. Nurse and Braun as the top pair is just not good. Nurse isn't a #1, he had a big year getting points off of McDavid and Draisaitl but without McDavid on the ice his numbers are pedestrian.

Good effort but I just don't see a way out of this mess that's short term. You lack the prospect capital, draft capital and quality NHLer capital to make the necessary changes.

If you could it would have happened already. Instead, the Devils continue to run spare parts.

Koskinen isn't as bad as everyone thinks he is and the fourth round selection isn't worth as much as you're acting. The deal's fine.

Montreal doesn't have "the last thing we need"'s right now. They're going to be building for a couple years. It's a fair deal.

Hoffman is not exactly a defensive stud either.. it's just swapping chairs IMO, while freeing up a spot for a young winger.

Me too. Hoffman is luxury we don't need. Dmen who can rush the puck is like the only thing we don't have right now. Even if he isn't great defensively, neither has been the rest of our d-core this year. At least this one produces offense, unlike the bunch we got right now. Plus with Petry hopefully gone, we'll need a PP quarterback. I can't do Wideman anymore.

Wideman was always a band-aid, I don't have anything against him, but against those who presented him like the next big PP QB.

The main reason I want Hoffman gone is to ease the way for Pezzetta/Harvey-Pinard/Ylönen next season. Much more fun losing with young forwards than old ones.

Issue 1:
You can't afford a $5M 3rd line C. You also gave him a NMC. Congratulation, RNH is now a permanent top 6 LW by default.

Issue 2:
You can't keep ALL the picks and prospects while putting bandages on obvious issues. Of their last eleven 1st round picks, only Yakupov is gone, and that only happened after he busted. At least one of those picks/prospects could have been leveraged into a legitimate starter, if not more. I don't blame them for drafting or even for failing to trade Yakupov, But they are sitting on Yamamoto, Broberg, Holloway, and Bourgault, while goaltending is still an issue and they have a defense featuring Keith, Ceci, and Barrie. Not terrible individually, but not good collectively, and they still have another hole besides.

Issue 3:
Two of the best players in the world but you patch together a bottom 6 and bury them in the defensive zone so those two guys can get 2 or 3 points a game instead of 1. Of course you don't have secondary scoring. If you make your lineup top heavy while also sinking the bottom, half your team is always going to be underwater. You need a better balance so the guys on the bottom can at least take a breath now and then.

Yes? Sorry, was it too generalized?

To summarize ...

Issue #1:

RNH McDavid Puljujarvi
Hyman Draisaitl Hoffman
(Or some combination thereof)
Is your top 6 and there's nothing inherently wrong with it.

Issue #2:

I don't see anything wrong with trading good assets for good players (Chychrun/Hart) if you can get them. This is more directed at the "can't trade this guy, he's going to be good", crowd.

Issue #3:

I agree with you that this team needs to be coached differently. I definitely didn't make that clear.
You've dispersed talent throughout the lineup, but I don't think that's necessary with better deployment and giving those lines some identity while letting them feel like they are contributing rather than just killing time until McDavid's next shift.
