Martinez costs real assets I think, probably a 2nd. I'd take him either way. I can't see st Louis letting husso walk , they need a good back up with Binnington being such a head case.

Agreed, I think Brannstrom’s shown since getting called back up that his ceiling remains higher than Zadina’s.

This swap may have worked at the start of the year but I don’t think Ottawa considers this anymore.

I’d pass on the Ottawa-Detroit swap. Small offensive defensemen that gets caved in isn’t exactly a Yzerman defense type. Pretty sure the smallest he’s drafted/acquired is Johansson at 6’.

But Staal has done that for 2yrs now and with his NMC it won't cost any assets to sign him for another year.

I'm pretty sure the reason for his NMC is that once he retires he wants to work in the the Hockey Operations side of the front office.

Brannstrom is thriving in Ottawa this year, why does he need a change of scenery? He's becoming a hugely important part of their future, like he was always going to.

Brännström has been playing well since returning from injury and I would feel the same way if I was an Ottawa fan. From Detroit's pov I don't see them trading Zadina until Vrána returns because they had chemistry at then end of last season. Plus he really doesn't have a lot of value right now so it only makes sense to hold on to him until the end of the season at least and with neither team is a playoff team it wouldn't happen until the offseason. it sucks about Batherson he was really fun to watch, hopefully he is back sooner than later.

I wonder which teams are on Martinez’s 16 team NTC.

I disagree. Granted I do think they will get some value, but it also could be a lot less than what it “should be”. Vegas needs to shed $7-8M when all are healthy (~ a month away). The easy call is to send Smith and his expiring contract out. But Vegas’ postseason issues have been scoring, I’d prefer not to weaken the forwards if possible. Also, sending Smith out does nothing for the off-season, we’d still be in cap crunch hell. Especially considering Hague and Roy need contracts. Martinez makes the absolute most sense to ship out now. If you don’t and move forwards instead, then you’re regulating Whitecloud to the 3rd pairing to go with McNabb or Hague. That seems to be bad roster maximization. So yeah. I want Martinez (and Brossoit) moved this month and if it ends up being for nothing, it is what it is. His 16 team NTC could also throw a wrench in maximizing return.

In my opinion, Detroit declines both trades.
