I would be okay with getting Severson at the right price but we don't need Miller

An obscenely high overpay for Miller. When Matthews leaves, (I doubt if he's traded if the Leafs are in win mode) so what? UFAs come and go all the time. Leafs will just gotta spend that Matthews money wisely, and while the player they get won't be as good, they can still get good players for 11m. Heck the following year when Marner leaves, maybe the Leafs sign UFA McDavid.

The Matthews trade strategy (win in next two years or trade him) presents an interesting, but unlikely, scenario.

If he plays 2021-22 and 2022-23 and they don't win, they would have to deal him between the end of the season in 2022-23 and before the 2023-24 season begins when his NMC kicks in. So, basically at the 2023 draft. Arizona could have the #1 pick. See where this is going...

Okay, Matthews may leave but not for the dump of a franchise that is Arizona.

Miller 50% retained for first, Niemela, and Robertson is about fair.

Newhook doesn't need to be included and if the Leafs want to dump us Ritchie for Schenn they maybe up the Canucks pick to a 4th (Ritchie+2nd for Schenn + 4th)

Leaf fans can correct me if I am wrong here, but there has been a running trope that Matthews will eventually leave Toronto for his home state (Arizona).

The strategy listed above would likely make Matthews a 2023 draft day trade if Leafs are unsuccessful.
Arizona could have the 1st overall pick in 2023.
The top pick in 2023 draft is a kid named Conor Bedard, who is supposed to be the best #1 since...Matthews.

I am just letting the imagination run a little here...

It's the reported ask (equivalent to Chychrun).

He would lead your team in points

and what was eichel rumoured for? what did he go for? These offers are never what agents and teams leak because they are always trying to jack up the price.

IIRC Eichel was rumoured as 3/4 first round assets and he got 3ish (depending how you value Tuch)

The Eichel situation also isn't remotely comparable to Miller's.

the eichel example was an example about how these ask are literally always bigger than they end up being. Stone, Karlsson, etc etc etc.

And the Canucks still decline. The return doesn't meet the needs of the team. If we're going to trade a 1C who's scoring at over a point per game, we should be getting players that we need back.

And to bring you back to reality, I'd say he would rather go to a team like LA or Anaheim because by then both of those teams would be further along with their rebuild and both those locations are still enough to home for him.

Arizona has been a joke of a franchise and I doubt any player willingly wants to join that mess before it's cleaned up. There's no indication of that happening yet.
