Sharks aren’t good this year and they need to move some contracts that are taking up cap space long term. Retention and taking cap back should help move some of these players and help San Jose long term.

The Sharks are effectively paying $7.8M for Matheson to get rid of Kane. Not wise when they need to pay Hertl.

In this scenario they are trading Hertl so it doesn't matter. They could still sign him again in the offseason if he makes it to FA. I get thats quite a bit but at least they would have a useable player on their roster rather than someone who they won't put back on the team.

Carolina is stacked on D I think they can afford to move one. Hertl can be resigned too if they would like; Carolina will have well over $20 mil in cap next season.

Yeah, but thats quite a haul for a rental from the Hurricanes who have put a lot of value into keeping KK so it would be a pure rental. where you give up your best center prospect, a great defensive prospect, and a 1st.

Also not sure why Dallas would be interested in a 36-year old Burns in decline (and still with years on his contract) even with retention.

$5 million annually for three seasons seems like a lot for the Sharks to take on in dead money. And the actual cash isn't insignificant, either, even with retaining only a quarter on Burns.

Carolina isn't stacked on D in their prospect pool. That's why we took two early RD this draft. Hertl isn't worth 2 quality prospects, a good 3rd line forward, and a 1st for half a season that he's not guaranteed to play with COVID happening. Canes decline.

What about Hertl half retained for Morrow, Fast and the 23 1st?

The season isn’t getting canceled and he Had covid already so he will play. What would you think is a better trade?

That's a bit closer, but the Sharks are a really unique team.

With so many 30+ players in long-term contracts with years ahead, EK65 and Reimer might just push this team into the playoffs in the tight pacific division. If Hertl makes it clear he wants to test the free agency then they should move him, otherwise he should likely be reupped, he wants to be there and knows the room.

I think if the Sharks can move Kane with retaining less than half and not taking on a long term contract Wilson absolutely crushed it. If they move Hertl, it's already a loss because it's unlikely the first or the prospect they get is similar to a player of Hertl's capability, nor will the pick/prospect be NHL ready while the aging core needs them.

I assume since you didn't comment on the other part of the post you agree.

Hertl is a great player and arguably the best UFA available at the deadline, but as a rental, he's probably worth a quality prospect, a 1st and maybe a 3rd/4th if a team is serious about acquiring him.

It sounds to me like Sharks fans don't want to let him go which I find strange but if he doesn, that's the max package I could see a team giving him unless they want to overpay by a lot.

I like Hertl but 2 things to consider:
1. I don’t expect us to keep TDA for another season, maybe 2. We will need the cap space that Morrow provides with excellent offense, as the team gets more expensive and the cap isn’t going up much.
2. 20 million in cap needs to fill 1 2C, 1 2LW, 4C, 3LW, 2rD, 3LD and 3RD. That 20 million will go quick. Sure we’ll probably re-sign Kotkaniemi, Bear and TDA to fill those slots, with Drury and possibly another prospect filling 3LD. Hertl will get his money but it probably wont be from us.

Morrow looks like 1RD material so, Im not trading him for much. The Canes are building for the future as much as now.

They can afford to move one, I do agree. However, Canes won’t move Heimosalmi or Morrow, albeit they might consider moving a LHD, but our RHD prospects are not going anywhere right now. And our cap situation really won’t be that good. We have a lot of players to resign, and Canes can’t really afford to resign many rentals. As it is, it is starting to look like Trocheck being extended isnt even guaranteed any more. Plus, Hertl and Trocheck are going to be 2 of the best Centers on the market come UFA time. While the framework of the trade is there, they don’t think an added piece of Meloche is enough to tip the scales for Canes to consider moving Morrow. Change Morrow out for someone like, Tieksola maybe, and a deal can be reached.

Sharks don’t need LD, that’s why I traded for a RD. And Tieksola isn’t interesting coming back. I get they have Necas, Bear, Deangelo and KK to sign as RFAs. Necas and Deangelo will probably cost a bit but not the other two. I feel if they trade for Hertl they could only resign him or Trochek in the offseason

That’s why he’s going to Dallas, a team with more older aging and underperforming plays than the sharks even. Hard to do that I must admit.

Feel like the only way they take Matheson is if they plan on buying out Vlasic.
