Dont think so, consistent 20+ goal scorer signed 3 years after this one, at just 2.125 Mil cap hit. For 2 late 1sts and a top prospect or an elite prospect + 2nd. Good luck finding a better deal than that.

And that is fair cause you could probably get Tarasenko for a similar price with maybe 2 mil retained. I am just saying that trading for a top 6 wing is not cheap when you want him half retained for 3.5 years the price goes up exponentially. Especially when the retention means you get him for less than 3 mil.

Wow obviously you don't follow the Habs, Toffoli is on pace for 19 goals (so 1 goal below his normal range) and 53 points (his 2nd best points total ever). Not sure how you can consider it a "down year" but whatever.

Five goals in 26 games works out to be a 15-16 goal pace over 82 games. Only his brutal 18-19 season was worse, and now he's going to be on the shelf for multiple weeks.

MTL retains its minimum 1st rd pick going to them in the deal. Another team retains and oh here you go is a nice mid round pick.

No GM on the planet is going to basically give up 3 1st rd picks or Lafrienere for Toffoli. Hell they aren’t giving up a 1st AND top prospect for him.

And they probably shouldn't but the other side if that is no GM on the planet would trade Toffoli half retained with 3 years remaining for less. Sure they might retain 1 mil but you are not getting him at 2.1 for 3.5 years for peanuts! That was really the point of this all.

Nobody is trading 3 1st rd picks for Toffoli regardless of his cap hit, I mean come on his full cap hit is under $5M there is a point of diminishing returns and this hits it. People forget the owners have final say ultimately and those people didn’t get rich paying people to work for their competitors.

Not really a need to retain on Toffoli as his AAV is already quite reasonnable but if a team would absolutely need retention, they wouldn't pay that price at all.
