It was more the original "Having a big defender that can move the puck like Chiarot is an incredible move for the playoffs!", because anybody who has watched him knows that's a big 'ol crock of balogney.
Could he net a 1st? Sure, there's a chance. But I don't think the Savard comp is the ideal comp. GMs have proven time and time again that they'll overpay for a big, shutdown RD, mainly because there's so few of them that are typically available. When it comes to LD's, just looking at this years market, there's a strong crop that will likely be available at the deadline. Just off of the top of my head, Gio, Hampus Lindholm, and Nick Leddy will likely be there, and I'm sure there's a decent number of others as well.
Also important to consider that over the past few years, the number of 1sts moved at the deadline for pending UFA's has been:
2021-3
2020-0 (There were 4 traded, One for Goodrow, one for Coleman, one for Kase, one for Skjei, all of whom had term remaining)
2019-1 (There were 2 others traded. One for Duchene, one for Muzzin.
2018-3 (There were a bunch of others moved throughout the year, but they were all for players with term)
2017-2
2016-2 (One of these is the last pending UFA LD to get a 1st in a trade...sort of...it was a conditional 1st that ended up as a 2nd)
2015-1 (Here's the actual last pending UFA LD to net a 1st. Keith Yandle, who had 41 pts in 63 games at the time of the trade, had a ton of name value, and was playing 24ish minutes a night)
So, 7 years, 1 LD who has brought back a 1st. Pretty wild to look back on, and as a Ducks fan, worries me about a possible return on Lindholm (Though, I'm still hoping for an extension).
