1. GM's scout other teams often, he could just like hockey, or he could be checking in on two teams in his division. The Avs and Stars have made recent trades.
2. GM's make moves to improve their team, not every move is a selling.
3. 2nd line center isn't the only position they're looking to improve. Neither team has a 2c available.
4. Avs couldn't afford one or justify the other.
5. Previous, sure. Never argued that.
I wonder if the blues would be willing to use a retention slot for 3 years when the documented cost is a 6th.
A picture book would offer more in-depth writing than Frank. I appreciate the offer</div></div>
Not angry. Just think it’s pretty silly when the literal armchair GMs pretend to know more than those who are paid to share their inside knowledge with us fans. I’ll remind you a third time that I’m not advocating one way or the other - simply laying out what was reported.
Have a good night kid.

1. MacFarland was at the Blue the Star game on Wednesday, Dec. 27th (according to your best pal Frank)
2. Stars aren’t in a position to sell, so he’s probably looking at the Blue.
3. Colorado is known to be in the market for a 2nd line center as Ryan Johansen isn’t working.
4. St. Louis probably isn’t trading Robert Thomas who’s in year five be of an eight year extension, or Brayden Schenn who was named captain over the summer.
5. Colorado has previous ties to Kevin Hayes, the only other center in St. Louis’s top nine.
Let me know if you need a picture book instead.
Again - I’m not advocating that this would be a good trade for the avalanche. Simply laying out what was reported by a credible writer.

Not necessary advocating to move Colton out of 3C long-term. I like him there too. At the same time, I’m not sure who else you’d move up the lineup with Lehkonen out…
A large part of the value of this deal comes from the remaining contract. He’s on pace for 21 goals & 45 points, at a cap hit under $2M for this year and the next two (until his age 33 season). You’re paying in large part for the retention/contract value.
I would also point to Hayes’s even-strength production compared to Johansen’s:
Hayes: 9G 6A 15P (100% goals & 79% points at ES)
Johansen: 7G 2A 9P (64% goals & points at ES)
Not to mention Johansen’s first 4 goals & 5 points came in Colorado’s first six games, and all but one goal was on the power play. You have to have success at even strength to win in the playoffs. I’m not necessarily advocating that Hayes would be the perfect fit. But the difference between he and Johansen is more than the 5 points you see on the surface. <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MeetYourMakar</b></div><div>Did Hayes even play last night? Didn't notice him at all. Hayes is not a fit for the current Avs and Frank is a lazy reporter, even worse for western teams. Sure the Avs used to have interest in Hayes but those days are gone.</div></div>
Kevin Hayes last night in a 2-1 game: 15:30 TOI, 2 shots on goal (5 attempts), 1 takeaway, 5 of 9 in the faceoff circle. Not spectacular, but not invisible either.
Obviously Frank is a Philly guy so he’s going to have more ins with east coast teams, but I think most would agree that he’s one of the four or five most connected national insiders. Also don’t think Colorado’s interest in a player that’s spanned his entire ten-year career, and was as recent as this summer, would wain in a matter of two months. Calling a writer “lazy” when you don’t like what they report is a “lazy” take.

I think this is exactly why they have him on the roster. As a cap-strapped team, and with their AHL club just up the road, they often carry fewer than 23 players on the NHL roster. Having one guy who can fill in at either position, specifically during the regular season, helps them manage their cap. There’s a reason he’s played in zero playoff games for the Avs…

I think you have to sign an elc if you’re a drafted player until you’re over age 25, and if you sign at age 24 or 25 then it’s a 1 year elc. If you don’t sign by then, you just go right to UFA.
But exactly to your point, him signing a contract that starts this year helps him get to RFA a year earlier. If his game translates to the NHL (which I think it will) then he’ll definitely get more on his next deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Anus_McLeod</b></div><div>I'd say Toews comes in closer to 7.5 if they also give him lots of trade protection. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I just really think his age will work against him. </div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>Toews at that number is a thank you for your service kind of deal, and move on. If Byram takes the steps he should, would COL do the unthinkable and move Toews for a haul considering what dmen have gone for at the deadline, not likely but an interesting thought.</div></div>
I think Toews gets at least $8M if the term is 6 years or less, whether it’s from the Avs or another team. He would be the top defenseman on half the teams in the NHL. Maybe Colorado could bring the AAV down by going longer on term, but at age 30 I’d hesitate to go more than 5 or 6 years.
Two recent comps are Dmirty Orlov (2x$7.75M) and Vince Dunn (4x$7.35M). I’m biased, but I would prefer Toews over either of those players. There will also be more clarity on how much the cap will continue to rise after this coming season.
I would also hesitate a little bit on big time trade protection if they offer max term, at least in the later years of the deal. There’s been some research about how late bloomers (like Toews) also tend to decline faster. I think his skating and IQ will help his longevity, but still have to be careful when signing a guy into his mid-/late-30s.
I’d imagine the ship has sailed on trading Toews. That probably would have been a decision they made early this summer, if at all. Even if they don’t think they can keep him come trade deadline, he would be their “own rental” (assuming the season hasn’t completely gone off the rails).
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>swissmontana</b></div><div>Kovalenko might get more. I think he'll only sign a 1-year RFA after the KHL season to come join the Avs for the playoffs, which would burn his last RFA year. If he's anywhere near as productive in the playoffs as he is in the KHL, he could be closer to Miles Wood money in UFA. There's a possibility that the Avs sign him to a longer RFA deal that gives him a tad more money (and since he'd join in April, his cap hit would be very minimal anyway), but if they manage to get him to sign for longer than just the 1-year, it would probably have to be at least $2. Otherwise, he should bet on himself.</div></div>
Kovalenko has to sign an entry level contract, and because of his age (23) it has to be a 2-year deal with a max AAV if $925k (plus performance bonuses). Evan Rawal put out an article this weekend about how Kovalenko may be signing with the Avs this summer, be loaned back to Torpedo to fulfill the last year of his KHL contract, and then come over to North America this spring. I think he would be eligible to play in the NHL playoffs, as long as he’s on the Avs roster before the trade deadline. If that’s the case, his entry level contract would expire at the end of the 24-25 season and he would be an RFA.

If that’s the case, Malinski stays down in the AHL and Hunt comes up. If Malinski isn’t getting everyday minutes, he’s better suited to be in the AHL one last year.
Don’t love Meyers on that third line. Would rather he center the 4th and one of the AHL guys gets a good look on the wing on the third line.
Can’t pair Johnson and Manson together, too slow, they’d get easily exposed
It’s a shame Ranta took off to Europe, he genuinely could’ve had a shot to break into the lineup this year</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>earl08</b></div><div>I like where you put Meyers & Pavel. Meyers was a big time scorer and is better than a 4C</div></div>

I think between Colton & Wood they'll get 40 goals/90 points this year. If Meyers can show up enough to get 30-35 pts, he's worth keeping around. Otherwise, he'll have blown his chance.</div></div>
RE: Meyers
I’m no expert, but it seems like Meyers was capable of playing a better two-way game than Newhook at the NHL level. Even if all the offense<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>M96N29</b></div><div>I still think they maximize the LTIR space and sign at least one more guy. Imo, they are more likely to go in with the D they have, using a Hunt, JJ, MacDermid rotation on the third. Realistically, they have two open forward positions. It's likely that Meyers is penciled into one of them (and I agree it shouldn't be higher than 4th line) for now, but he's still unproven and he'll be on a short leash. With the cup window open and some really competitive teams out there, it's hard to think they roll with two unproven guys. Right? I hope not.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>swissmontana</b></div><div>I think it'll be another signing at the 4C position over Pavel, but I agree with this. Pavel doesn't seem like he's ready at all based on reports from dev camp.</div></div>
doesn’t translate, I think he could be a reliable bottom six guy.
RE: Adding other players
Just to clarify, starting the season with some you gets guys in the lineup doesn’t mean they’re locked into it. If they’re not keen on any remaining free agents (which they might be), why not give their internal guys a look before making a trade. I’d love to see them add Pius Suter personally, but we’ll see.

I think that’s a pretty good deal for Colorado. They would miss O’Connor, but Jarnkrok is an upgrade at the same position. More versatile, signed for 2 extra years. Granted he’s $1M more expensive, but still a good value deal. And he should fit nicely with the Avs style. Timmins is definitely an upgrade on MacDermid, and also cost controller for 2 years. I don’t think Colorado was keen on giving him up in the Kuemper trade, but they were stuck with no goalie in a stagnant goalie market that summer.

I think it was Freidman that reported Colorado was interested in Backlund before they traded for Johansen. Now that they have Johansen & Colton, I would think they’re probably out on Backlund. I do think they need another center who can PK, but not at Backlund’s price (trade & AAV).

Big fan of adding both those guys to the Avalanche. Suter can help them on the PK, and gives some flexibility to move Colton to wing in the top six if they wanted.

I would be really interested in Pius Suter instead of Heinen for the same role. He might cost you a little more AAV but the Avs should still be able to afford him. Jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none type of forward who can round out the third line. And maybe more importantly, he’s a solid PKer who can take faceoffs.

Sub $3.5M would definitely help, especially on a mid-term deal. From a personal perspective, Rodrigues should be trying to cash in. He’s finally out together a couple of consistent seasons and has a chance to make his money. Hopefully that’s in Colorado at a reasonable number!
