Staal Drouin and Hoffman should work

Description
A ready made spot for KK to grow into eventually.
Armia and Anderson aren’t bad wingers to develop with, in the meantime.
We still have $6.5mm to play with for a 21 man roster, with hopefully Byron and Weber back for the playoffs.
Poehling contract is easy for both sides. Player gets a 1 way when only owed a 2 way.
Norlinder likely makes the team, given his European out clause.
I’d expect at least one more depth D signing from Bergevin though, or at least a PTO from a veteran right shot D (I’d try and get one of these three: Vatanen, Demers, or Gudbransson).
Oh, and claim Corey Perry when Tampa tries to sneak him off their cap with waivers.
And yeah, that’s a sick checking line (don’t waste your breath calling them a « 4th line »).

Side note: For those who think Staal isn’t worth $3mm, I’ll bet he has a better season than Danault, who doesn’t have the luxury of playing with quality D or goaltending anymore. Without any of the long term contract risk, and at somewhere close to half of the cap cost. Get ‘er done Berg.

Drouin Staal Hoffman.. IM crying. That could be the worst line in the NHL.

Did you watch Staal at all as a Hab? Worst player I've seen play for them in years. He can't even skate anymore. Add Drouin and Hoffman to that and they're never getting out of their own end lol. What are you doing bro

Staal simply isn't worth $3M anymore. I'd give him $1M, but I'd rather not use the roster slot on him. His only impression was that Perry and Armia played well around him, but they were the heavy lifters on that line, Staal was replaceable.

Drouin and Hoffman on the same line is going to put ALOT of defensive responsibility on Staal which I’m just not sure is a wise choice at this stage of his career.

Staal is done, and I highly doubt he has any interest in playing for MTL this year... pretty sure he has family in mind.

The roster spot doesn’t matter as much with a taxi squad. If he’s overpaid, no one claims him. We don’t need the cap space cuz of Byron and Weber on LTIR and we have replacement salary in abundance. If Poehling outplays him, then all the better. Organizational depth at such a key position though is never a bad thing.

The primary purpose of that line would be o-zone face-offs and the powerplay. The other 3 lines can all defend.

His playoff performance despite playing through an injury, and his decision to waive his no trade to come here, are both counterpoints to your statements, which are backed up by, seemingly, nothing.

I loved Stalls career but he’s definitely lost a step. I wouldn’t bring him back and you are very kind at $3 million.

How much due to a temporary injury and how much is permanent? People also thought he was washed up after a short stint with the Rangers, and then he massively outplayed the value of his contract in Minny. There’s no real risk on a 1 year deal. We have the cap space. Depth is a good thing. If KK or Poehling outplay him, then it’s win win for the team. Better to make them earn it than to « anoint » them.

I fully agree though, if he costs less than $3mm, even better. Bergevin and team doctors know way more, in his case, than any of us do.

I agree that depth is good. As much as I like Stall professionally and personally, I just think he’s lost a step in the regular season. If teams doing well and looking at playoffs a player can be added then.

I like the fact you mentioned Poehling. He may surprise some people this year.

I hear ya, but we have the cap space, so you save the draft picks doing it this way. I agree completely that this would be done with the playoffs fully in mind. Let Poehling and KK play as much as possible in the regular season to develop, and see where they’re at come playoff time.

Last I heard there was not going to be a taxi squad for 21-22 season, did that change? Even as an extra on the taxi squad it's a waste of space. Staal was bad like really really bad. Like if I had a choice between him or Alzner, I would choose Alzner, he at least could play bottom pairing.

Leadership, storied career, and a center.. all great things to add, but not at the cost of blocking development and getting slower and older. Also if you think he even has a chance to get ouplayed in camp by rookies then you dont gamble 3mill on it. The idea of adding a center to shore up depth is good, but staals just not a fit to push kk.
