An attempt to 'play the kids' and use EDM's increased cap space to trade for elite RFAs who may be priced out/squeezed out of their team's roster rather than signing older expensive UFAs, with the exception of EDM outbidding COL for Grubauer after missing out on Markström the previous offseason and going in on Goodrow to strengthen a penalty killing 3rd line. Am unsure of the trade values of Buchnevich and Fiala in the circumstances of NYR/MIN wanting/needing to trade them for roster/cap room and in MIN's case being unwilling to take cap back. These seem light, but the number of teams who would want/be able to pay for elite wingers in their prime seem? small - LAK or NJD have cap, but do they want to block their own prospects?

Roster designed to have enough cap space to sign a surprise middle-tier UFA who gets squeezed out of the flat cap market and/or pick up a good player off of waivers from cap-strapped contenders who may be moving players up and down throughout the season to maximize their deadline cap. The Pacific division next season should be open enough that EDM may be able to take some time at the beginning to see what it has with its young players and course correct as needed without risking a playoff spot.

EDM is likely to spend its cap on UFAS (prob RNH, Larsson, Smith, and then outbid other teams to sign a Hyman/Saad/Landeskog for a hefty long contract that may be history repeating itself) rather than assets on RFAs, but matching a contention window to McDavid/Draisaitl should involve targeting players whose aging curves match theirs. This roster also preserves future cap flexibility by enduring the pain of the Koskinen and Neal contracts. In addition, it maintains the ambiguity of Klefbom on LTIR, but contains enough cap that with accrual he could conceivably be added mid-season if he can return.
