I don't think Ghost is bad. I just don't think he ever lived up to the hype. I think he's decent, but it's not a point worth arguing to death. He's not great. lol

EDIT: I assumed with Butcher and Smith that pretty much locks up your 1st and 2nd pairing LD situation.

We need more defensive LHD with has had high breakout success rate (and multiple years on deal).
Butcher has one year left and lost a lot of playing time to rookies this year.
Smith is locked into top-4.

Risto only has one year left on his deal and if the Sabres are going to trade Jack and Sam they will have plenty of cap space. I dont think the Devils see Risto as a cap dump so they will be giving something back in return.
