Just because he is not a franchise altering player does not mean his value is as low as proposed.
He is a solid top 6 winger, with the potential to be a contributing piece on a top line, albeit not the line driver.
The two picks in the third round will have a roughly 20-25% chance to make the NHL on a regular basis, not be a contributing piece, just make the NHL.
Nolan Patrick has had some very unfortunate health issues that make him a significant longshot to get to the point where he is regularly contributing in a top 6 role, and may not ever do so.
So why would Detroit give up a capable top 6 guy for a 20-25% shot at a roster player, and Patrick?
