Zucker and Marino for Ellis

Description
*Note that Ellis and Zucker are currently injured but should be healthy by the trade deadline

Zucker is someone the Predators could keep for the next few years or retain cap space and trade to get maximum value out of the asset. Marino is coming off a fantastic rookie season as a shut-down RHD. He's regressed a bit from last year but is a young top four RHD signed long-term, which should be appealing to a team like Nashville.

Penguins are able to protect Ellis, Dumoulin and Letang in the expansion draft. Penguins forward protection list likely would not have included Zucker.

Marino's play has taken a big hit this season, and has a long contract incoming. I'm not saying he won't bounce back, but if Nashville were to trade Ellis right now, they should go for safer options.

NSH accepts that trade in a heartbeat. Pens have no intention to trade a good 23 year old dman

Considering, his regression this year, if they can get a significantly better player for him to play with Malkin and Crosby for the next few years, they should absolutely consider it.

Not a 30 year old who makes over $6 mill for the next handful of years. Marino has 84 games played and people already saying he’s regressing. Doesn’t make sense

Getting rid of Ellis big contract and bringing in a young top 4 dman who is 23. Yes, they accept that without hesitation

Marino has like 58 games from his rookie year of being great. That's not a huge sample size. And statically, he has regressed by almost every measure. At least acknowledge that part.

Ellis has a significantly higher chance of being the better player for the next 3-4 seasons.

Agreed. Thats not a huge sample size. So why do you want to trade him away this year based off even less of a sample size?

Because Ellis has a large sample size of being elite and would be a huge upgrade offensively.

And marino could be elite too. It doesnt make sense to trade good young players for declining 30+ year olds making more money

Drop the Zucker contract, change the 2nd to a 1st and Nashville might accept. Bringing in Zucker doesn't really help them with what they are trying to do. But I also don't love that contract from a Pittsburgh standpoint. I feel like the Pens would be trying to move him again in 3 years when they probably start the rebuild.

It does when you are prioritizing the next few years, the older player is significantly better, and the younger player is showing signs of regression before he gets a large cap hit.

So you keep saying hes regressing. But you also said last years sample size of 50ish games is not a big sample size. Now why are you saying hes regressing based off a smaller sample size?

The only other way to really make it work with the cap would be to send both Marino and Pettersson in this type of deal. I don't think trading both of them would be a great idea.

The other question is what is Nashville trying to do? The clearly have major holes and Zucker would fill one of those. They also haven't committed to a rebuild and their GM is old as dirt.

Zucker would give them a player to maybe help their team now and also an asset they can move to get value later.

I'll spell it out for you

-Small sample size of actually being very good

-Second season is trending towards being significantly less good

Point is that he is a risky investment for both of those reasons.

So youre taking a sample of 28 games over a sample of 56 games. Got it.

lmao yes thats your entire point. "-Small sample size of actually being very good" (56 games) "-Second season is trending towards being significantly less good" (this season of 28 games). You keep saying hes regressing, but hes played 28 games this year. Very very small sample size. Based off your logic, should they trade Guentzel for Pavelski since Pavelski has proved hes had more elite years than guentzel?

That is not even close to his statements. The difference between Guentzel and Pavelski is worlds lesser than the difference between Marino and Ellis. Remove your Pens glasses and at least acknowledge that Ellis is far better than Marino and probably will be for the last years of Malkin, Crosby and Letang.

His logic still applies. But focusing on the 2 players in this thread, why would pittsburgh want to trade a good young dman for an older more expensive one? Who is to say Marino doesnt get back on track and outplays Ellis?

If Marino bounces back to his last year's form, which is possible, he'd still have to progress enough to outrank Ryan Ellis, a top 10 RD in the league. They'd trade the younger for the older dman because the older is better right now and is a sure bet for the last good years of your core.

Declining? Ellis had 38 points in 49 games last year. He's still got a lot of good hockey left if he can stay healthy.

Disagree. If Marino plays like he did last year, hes a very good top 4 dman. They wouldn't need to improve that side of the defense. And why would NSH say no if he bounces back?
