Wings pass, gardiners on waivers and hasn't been good at all. Flat cap for 4 years means you will have to pay way more then this for wings to take him. Staal will get a 3rd or 4th by himself. Pass all day on this unless you put something of value in here
Prob needs ned + one more piece at this point

No. It’s about making cap space not because he needs to be moved. He is the least likely to be claimed so create that cap space.

I think you are missing the point he's not saying Gardiner is bad. He is saying Detroit along with every other NHL team with the cap space could have claimed off waivers.

He is saying we would have to trade Bokk and a 2nd with Gardiner to get Staal. Gardiner isn’t bad.

He's bad enough that he isn't a mainstay in the lineup every night. Canes pay to get rid of him.

You're about to find out if he's bad or not. If he was good...there would be AT LEAST 1 team willing to take him.

AND what exactly do you mean by create the cap space? If he goes to the taxi squad all that the "waive" does is make enough cap space for ELC (bean) to replace him. To which, I'd point out that...YOU DON'T NEED TO WAIVE Gardiner in order to bring up Bean. You don't need to expose Gardiner to some other team if you don't want to. You could just make him a healthy scratch. This entire move is exactly because he's bad and nothing else.

BTW I'm still pissed off at Waddell/Dundon for trading away Braden Schneider for Brady Skjei...lost out at the opportunity for a good Dman for a terrible cap dump. Terrible trade.

Not the case at all. He is injured but not IR injured. They want to gain cap space while allowing him to come back 100%

CAR has $11M in deadline cap space. They're practically swimming in cap space. What are you talking about? This move doesn't save much cap at all.

This entire post is wrong so you keep trucking.

1. In flat cap world, a team probably doesn’t take an injured defender on waivers. Any other year, probably so.
2. His daily cap hit is lower on the taxi squad. I.e we are gaining cap space every day with him there.
3. We never had to waive him for Bean. We’ve had 7 defenders for 1/2 the season. Bean was already going up and down the taxi squad between games. Now we get to do the same with Gardiner.

We have 5.5 million right now with 2 top 6 guys on longer than expected injuries. Squeezing more cap space allows us to get a higher dollar guy in the near future and one at the deadline, if we need it. All mean while saving the cost of acquisition because we aren’t asking teams to eat half his deal. Honestly, this isn’t hard to comprehend.

The absolute MAX CAR can save is $211,667.
Sending Gardiner down means $2,975,000 instead of $4,050,000. A whopping savings of $1,075,000... BUT you also need to fill that slot...SO Let's pretend it's CARs cheapest defenseman Bean (just making it up)...863,333. So the math is 1,075,000 - 863,333 = $211,667.

What you're telling me is that CAR is SOOO desperate for an extra $211,667 that they're willing to risk losing a "good" player with 2.5 years left?

They have $11M in deadline cap space. They don't need $211,667. He stinks.

It's getting rid of 4.5 million for 2 more years when bean is ready obviously. They need the space

Oh, I get that. but you can't say "he's good" and then say, but all our ELCs can fill in for him without a hitch, BUT for you guys...he'll actually be good. CAR will need to pay to lose him.

How much of a risk is it? Very low because he is injured. We have someone to backfill so, in the ever so small case that the good player is chosen, the team is still fine. In the end, yes you can afford the loss of a good player in a position that you have good immediate backfill. To add icing to the cake, we gain another 600k or so to the deadline cap space.

The point is what @buffbry is making. No team is trying to help CAR out. Gardiner costs too much money. If he truly IS a good player. Someone will take him because they see his contract and think he's worth it for 2 more years. If he clears...the league is telling you that they don't want him.
