Heard a radio segment on TSN 1260 yesterday and there was a debate on whether Nurse is close to becoming a number 1 defenseman and a top 15 Dman in the league. Jason Gregor said yes while Jason Strudwick said no. I agree with Strudwick as I think all the guys listed here are better and I would trade Nurse for any day (except a handful of the older guys as it wouldn't fit with Edmonton's timeline). This puts Nurse at the lower end of the Top 30. The only ones I wouldnt trade Nurse for are probably Weber (age and contract), and probably Karlsson and Doughty just based on their contracts which would be near impossible to fit under the cap. Thoughts? Is Nurse close to being a number 1? I personally think his ceiling is a good 2 way number 2 D.
Unfortunately there are many that are currently better. Does he have potential to be a number 1? Yes. But right now most teams would have him as a 2nd pairing d man. Here is where he would slot with some notables today.
Tampa - 3rd pairing
St Louis - 2nd pairing
Dallas - 3rd pairing
Toronto - potentially 2nd pairing, likely 3rd pairing
Montreal - potentially 2nd pairing. likely 3rd pairing
Vegas - likely second pairing
Colorado - Likely 2nd pairing
Boston - Potentially 1st/2nd pairing as they are strong on the right, weaker on the left. No disrespect Boston fans. Just a reality.
Philly - Second/third pairing
Button was talking about Nurse for the Team Canada 2022 roster.
It's hard to argue current value based on historical data, so "becoming a #1D" isn't something that can be disproven by looking at last year or the year before. Nevertheless, Nurse has posted offensive numbers of a "#1D" (whatever that means) for several years now. That's not in question. What Gregor / Button and others are talking about is the fact that he's taken a step forward this year in his defensive reads and decision making with and without the puck. He's playing like a top-15 defenseman in the league right now and "becoming" one means he maintains this level of play.
FYI I wouldn't trade Nurse for a bunch of those guys due to age. I mean Doughty? Karlsson? OEL? What is this, 2015?

Its laughable you think Nurse wouldnt make the top 4 on teams like Dallas and Toronto
Ekhlom > Nurse, but they are at different stages of their careers so that makes sense not to trade them for each other. Ekholm is the superior overall defenseman right now though.

Anyone who understands an aging curve wouldn't trade Nurse for Ekholm.
Not the question. It's who is better than Nurse. Ekholm > Nurse. Karlsson is also better than Nurse, but literally no one is going to trade for Karlsson.
Nurse is not a top50 NHL defenseman and he is not a top15 Canadian D. He is 2nd pair D that can probably move on the 1st if he has a good partner but otherwise, he isn't a #1 or #2. Good offensively, not really good defensively/PP/PK. He plays a lot and against the best players, that's usage.
Oleksiak in Dallas. And in Toronto they'd replace Brodie and Holl. No question. You'd disagree with that ?
He wouldn't replace Olekisak, for one reason and that reason is that he wouldn't fit well with Heiskanen. Nurse is better than Oleksiak offensively no doubt, but he wouldn't mech well with Heiskanen, instead of Heiskanen leading the offense he would have to stay back more. Oleksiak and Heiskanen have perfect chemistry together Heiskanen is a two-way dman and Oleksiak is a defensive dman, Nurse is an offensive dman. Nurse would maybe be the 4th best man in Dallas, but not in the top 4.

And yes I would disagree with this. Brodie is stability for Rielly. Holl and Muzzin are without question one of the best pairings in the North Division.
