If Calgary had a ton of interest in him, why wouldn't they have just claimed him off waivers and kept Bennett and the 5th?

"Ton of interest" doesn't necessarily mean "Teams are willing to send value to the Rangers".

If (When?) ADA gets moved, it'll either be 50% retained for very little value, or an exchange for a poor contract.

Treliving would be fired immediately if he made this horrendous trade.

Only 4 teams could have claimed him and stayed under the cap. Anyone else needs salary retained or contract taken back, or both.

But they are not doing this. Derek Ryan a pick and some retention maybe.

well Bennett doesn't have a NTC/NMC so unfortunately, he won't have any say in where he may or may not go. so there is that.

at this point in the season not many teams are going to be able to take on the cap hit without sending similar cap back. so if thats what it comes to and ada gets bought out then fine. but i dont see bennett being the piece thats moved for him.

According to insider Bob McKenzie only 4 teams have expressed interest in Tony DeAngelo, And those 4 teams are Anaheim, Calgary, Detroit and LA. So i would say that it's hardly tons of teams. And McKenzie spoke to someone affiliated with Calgary that told him that Calgary has no interest in pursuing ADA at this time. So it sounds like basically Anaheim, Detroit and LA are the ones most interested in him right now.

Then ADA won't get traded. His value is negative. The next NHL team that this guy plays for (if any) is gonna face some serious backlash from fans and media.

the situation is fairly simple:
ADA is available to anyone who wants him.
the Rangers will not retain salary or take on a bad contract.
if not traded, he will be bought out on June 15th.

no need to make this more complex than it is.

I'm just trying to narrow it down even more.
Nobody wants ADA at full value.
If the rangers won't retain and won't take back a bad contract, nobody will trade for him.

Which only leaves a buy out at the end of the season.

I agree for the wings/ ducks that it would be a contract and low pick coming back as there offer bc they could’ve had him for freee but the other teams couldn’t have taken him for free

I'd give you Backes or something like that. Not quite a cap neutral trade, but it eases the strain of taking him, and if doesn't work out, they could just buy him out next summer, whereas the Rangers just let the contract expire.
