Trade Nylander

Description
Mmkay hear me out- Listening to the SDP I was just curious what this team would look like without the most moveable contract of the big 4. I friggin’ love Nylander but Burkey might be on to something. Reinforcing the RD and making it every bit as strong as our left side opens up opportunities for younger (sub 1,000,000) players on the wing, or talent from Europe. Also thinking any value/term discrepancies for Ellis are met with Nylander’s contract being more than half paid off already.

I know Nylander is the one who’s providing more value than his contract, but the cap implications of Tavares, Matthews, and Marner is going to affect the team’s composition eventually.

I wouldn't make this trade if I'm the Leafs. Willy is 24 years old. Ellis will be turning 30 next month and has 7 more years left on his contract. Willy is a bargain contract at 6.9 mil AAV for the Leafs.

Besides Dubas already promised Tavares when he signed him that he's not trading Matthews, Marner or Nylander. If Willy is to ever be traded out of Toronto it will be after Dubas gets the axe. Dubi's pocket protectors and Willy's beautiful hair are joined at the hip.

There are very few scenarios where it would make sense for the Leafs to trade Nylander. This is not one of them, imo.

There's a reason why several teams fired Brian Burke....Toronto didn't do all that overhaul (A great offseason, like A+) just to trade Nylander. The whole purpose of these moves was to keep Nylander and give the big 4 more supportive pieces. Simmonds might finally be able to get back to his game, Holl and Dermott are not going to be scratched regularly. Both are top 6 defensemen. Trading Nylander makes this offense significantly weaker. The leafs finally look pretty balanced, and this trade ruins it.

What gets me about Burke is the hypocrisy. Here's a guy who ran the Leafs right into the ground trying to fast track things making mistake after mistake before he was fired by MLSE. Now he sits on his crusty a$$ and rips his former team every night. Funny how that works.

Honestly no disrespect to anyone on this forum, but his opinions are about as heard as ours at this point. He's as good as anybody on this site. It's very funny how that works.

I just wish he'd tell different stories. If I have to hear the Sedin brothers draft story again I fear I'll do a swan dive off the CN Tower. And can he please stop saying "since Christ was a carpenter?" He obviously scripts what he's going to say ahead of time but come on Burkey... change it up a little!

How about the " I checked with the league again, and they still only award 1 cup" Joke. He pulls it out once a week during the season 3 times during playoffs.

So after the trade, Leafs are sitting two very solid 3rd pair dmen, one with top 4 upside if he has a solid season.

And upfront they are playing a guy that's never played in NA, who apparently has Trevor Moore upside, with Tavares on the 2nd line.

You really don't see the problem with this?

If the Leafs move a big gun forward, it's not Nylander's value deal but one of the 11 million dollar men that will be moved.

man Burkes really has done it now. Moving Nylander would not help the leafs.

I would only move Nylander if a team came and offered a significant overpay for him

In general you dont move a 24 year old 30 goal scorer.

trade everyone bring in 4thline toughness done

Burke needs to realize his philosophy is flawed and look what happened with every team hes made, Toronto, Vancouver and so on all didnt do much in the playoffs, heck in some occasions he made them worse.

If it wasnt for him Seguin and Hamilton would have been leafs.

I would trade marner if someone needs to go. If he has a good season (on pace for 90+ points) then his value would be high. Trading nylander doesn’t solve the leafs cap problem and without him their forward depth is ****. Atleast if you trade marner you can get a good forward and defenseman for the cap hit, can’t do that with nylander.

That cap hit is hard to absorb he should be about 9/yr. If they deal nylander it should be for a top six cheaper winger, a bottom six winger on the younger side, and a pick depending on other two assets.

Brian Burke is right. Nothing against the player, but the Habs are better than the Leafs. We don't have the goaltending as the Habs, our defense is no where near the Habs, and outside our top two lines, we have a bunch of 4th liners. We need to move away from Nylander.

Overall, the Habs are a more suited team for the playoffs than the Leafs are

andersen has played better hockey than carey price over the last 4 years
8bcc5e4c2c82243588abaca10ebf07c7.png

also, since keefe took over the habs were 23rd in GA, leafs were 14th. They added joel edmunson and potentially romanov to their blue line, we added brodie, bogosian, lehtonen, and subtracted players like ceci and barrie.

as for the depth, thornton, vesey, simmonds, spezza, and anderson are much more than just 4th liners lol

First off, I'm not talking about Price's past. They did not have a qualified backup last season, but now they do with Allen. In terms of defense, there is no argument there, the Habs are better in this department. For the forwards, they don't have the same top two talent lines as the Leafs, but everyone other than Kerfoot are nothing more than 4th liners. The Habs have depth in all four lines.

If you want a strong representation of what the Habs are, they are the CBJ but with better goaltending. Like it or not, the Habs are more well suited for the playoffs than the Leafs.

but the habs let in more goals

also why won't andersen be better either? we haven't had a qualified backup for him until now

also, the leafs top 6 is so good that it doesn't matter what montreal rolls out on their bottom 2 lines lmao. The leafs top 6 scored more goals than gallagher, tatar, domi, armia, lehonen, suzuki, danault, cousins, weal, drouin, kotkaniemi, and thomspon combined. If hyman was on montreal last season he's probably their leading scorer lmao. the leafs have such absurd scoring (1 50-60 goal guy, a 40-50 goal guy, a 30-40 goal guy and a playmaker who will set them all up and prob hit 100 points)

thornton, vesey, simmonds, spezza, barabanov, and kerfoot will likely outplay the hell out of montreal's bottom 6 this year, they are all still good players
