Description

1. Ladd is likely going to LTIR. Don’t @ me about him playing in the ECF. His knees and hips are shot and he cost the Isles Game 2 against Tampa. Beat writers like Arthur Staple say that Lou will put him on Robidas Island.
2. Many teams in the NHL want to pare down payroll. Isles should look to swap for contracts they can buy out- trade for Neal and buy his contract out.
3. Move Boychuk out for a contract, and throw in some 2nd rounders to make it happen. Filppula for Boychuk is really a $3 million cap hit for Detroit (actual money it’s a wash). Valteri can play LW and C, which the Isles will need when injuries mount.
4. That will give the Isles enough room to not only sign Barzal, Martin, and Greene but also a free agent on the level of Hoffman. They don’t HAVE to get him, and I can make arguments for Söderberg or Granlund instead.
5. Note: I don’t think Wahlstrom, Koivula, Wilde, or Bellows are ready. I think it’s more likely that Bolduc, Hutton, and Greer come up when injuries happen. Ho-Sang has an outside shot but that’s about it.

You can't buyout Neal, And a 8 year deal with Matt Barzal is going to cost more then $8.5 million per probably closer to $10 million per. And what's wrong with Ladd that he might wind up on LTIR?

1. I don't know if the buiyout window has closed. A lot of teams are waiting to see when the season begins/how long it is. My take is that things are extremely fluid with the CBA and there are clauses that we don't entirely know. Neal isn't the only option here.

2. Ladd's knees ARE shot. He's had too many surgeries. He only played in the ECF becaue the team had no one else on the roster left in the bubble. And then he sucked. He's going LTIR and will say hellow to Robidas.

3. With the NHL finances as they are going forward I can't see Barzal wanting to risk injury or regression for the sake of a short term contract. Isles CAN go higher AAV but I wouldn't go past $9.5 AAV.

Edmonton needs depth and Hickey and Komarov can do that. Neal doesn't add anything, and it's financially a win for the Oilers.

The buyout window closed.

Bolduc is at least 2-3 years away. Wilde needs a full year in the AHL.

Koivula is ready. He’s defensively responsible and he has continued to produce wherever he goes. 9 pts in 10 games in the finish league right now. Wahlstrom is ready as well. They don’t seem to like bellows so even if he ready he won’t get a shot. If they don’t trade him before the season starts they will likely bury him in the AHL and he’ll probably get selected by Seattle.

I’d disagree with that. Oilers have solid depth at the moment and Neal was scoring goals at a great rate last season before busting his foot was on pace for 30. Even being mostly pp production it’s still worth keeping around burn another year off his term then explore options next offseason. Outside of a very minor trade belief is oilers are done and set for next year.

Neal's scoring was deceptive. He had 9 goals in his first 8 games last season and then only 10 goals the rest of the season. He wasn't really that productive, and this is partially a financial decision- he's owed more than Hickey/Komarov and they can use the defense right now with Klefbom out (Hickey isn't a negative; the Isles just have other guys who have displaced him).

I'm keeping an open mind to the buyouts. Things are fluid with the coming season. Don't make grand assumptions.

Bolduc would be a fill-in at best. Wilde isn't close. Koivula I like but I think he's on the cusp but hasn't taken that next step. Same with Wahlstrom.

I personally wouldn’t bump any of them out for hickey nothing against him just the blueline is very nicely balanced as it is. No offence just a deal I don’t see oilers considering.

The islanders had two buyout windows. They didn’t take advantage, it is highly unlikely they will be given another opportunity.

Wilde is a lot closer than bolduc. It really isn’t close. Bolduc couldn’t handle playing in an NHL game this season. He is extremely raw.

Koivula has improved every year since coming to NA. Wahlstrom carried brassard and bailey when he was in the NHL and was better defensively than both. If Lou/trotz don’t start giving NHL ready prospects a fair shot , we are going to see a lot of trade requests. Ho-sang already requested a trade, Aho gave an interview 6 months ago saying how he was frustrated the isles kept calling him up without giving him any games. Not a good look.

Both the NHLPA and owners would have to agree to a buyout as the buyout window is clearly defined in the CBA. Most will be against it as they negotiated an escrow cap of 20% this year and a buyout would just add to this escrow figure causing existing contracts to lose out on actual dollars. Owners would also have more cash out of pocke.

So the only grand assumption is there would be more buyouts for teams without eligible arbitration players.

Things for the season are still fluid but the time when the offseason was fluid is long past. Right now all eyes are on figuring out the rules for the season, not changing rules for the 1ish month remaining this offseason.

Neither Detroit or Edmonton does those deals!! Detroit signed Filppula to retire in Detroit!! They might trade Neilsen as a cap dump. But Flippula isnt a cap dump for them..lol.

1st off Oilers need to shed salary this deal is lateral move and does not help them. Wings are not trading Filpula with one year left at 3 million to take on two years at 12 million all for two seconds round picks. That is 9 million in cap for two seconds.

As far as a buyout window, the CBA is quite clear and both parties would need to agree and the Grand Assumptions are there will be a 2nd buyout. When all this Covid hit, there were rumors of a buyout with out penalties and the owners crushed that right away. Doubt it will be revisited.

Weird idea. Dont do it because youll get screwed next offseason when every dollar counts. Also look into duclair at 3mil for 1 or 2 years instead of hoffman. Better defensively no off ice issues cost effective and similar production. Especially considering duclair had nobody to play with.
