That’s a no from Chicago. Not enough quality other than Hanifin and even at that it’s getting almost cancelled by the inclusion of Murphy

I dont think thats nearly enough for Toews, especially with 50% retention

If the pick is a 1st instead of a 3rd, then it’s probably a deal?

Hanifin at 23 has over 400 games experience. The age difference is a substantial win relative to Murphy, so Hanifin carries a sizable premium in value, even with Murphy’s right shot and cheaper contract.

Plus Rittich could be a great platoon starter for CHI for 5 years potentially.

Seems rather generous with Rittich nearing 30 and at .908 so far I mean if what if he declines... yikes 😬

I hear you, but he’s early in his NHL career and has potential to improve as well. Especially if he’s given more of a 1A role (which he won’t get behind Markstrom in CGY). It’s certainly a risk.

Speaking of risks, what if the guy who is well past 30 with having over 1000 games played, including lots of deep playoff runs declines?...that’d be a risk CGY would have to take in this deal.

I think CGY would improve the offer above what I’ve posted if this is in the ballpark. And personally I think bringing in Toews for 1C duties in CGY would be a massive improvement in having a chance to go beyond the first round of playoffs.

That's not close to enough for Toews at 50% retained, and throwing Murphy in just makes it even more lopsided.

hard pass. not even close. Murphy is worth a late first and Toews 1/2 retained os worth a lot more than what you have here

That value just doesn’t get it done, plain and simple. Phillips, Tuulola, and the 3rd are meh. Ryan is decent player, but he’s a UFA and the Hawks don’t need him. Rittich is probably a 1B at best, and he’s not going to get it done behind Chicago’s D. Hanifin is a nice piece, but some of the shine has worn off there, and he’s certainly not bringing back Toews at 50% as the lone significant piece.

Murphy is probably worth slightly less than Devon Toews right? And that fetched two 2nds. Certainly worth less than Schmidt, but that was a crazy steal at a single 3rd. He’s got a valuable contract with a great AAV, but the market is a bit depressed right now for dmen who aren’t on the top pairing.

I’d say Murphy for a 2nd and a prospect is in the ballpark, but not a 1st rounder.

Fair point otherwise RE: Toews @ 50%

Murphy is probably worth a late 1st or two 2nds.

These 50% retained trades of guys that have lengthy term left are extremely unrealistic, you'd have to massively overpay Chicago to eat $5.25M for three years on Toews and this is far from an overpay.

Murphy is defiantly worth a late first
He's a young top 4 shut-down RHD, who is very physical and can play on the PK, and is on a good contract and is a rare player in the league.

This definitely favors the Hawks.

Speaking frankly about trade values...
Hanifin for Toews at about 20-25% retained is likely a fair trade when you factor in age and contracts; Flames win short term, Hawks win long-term. Once you start talking 50%, Flames have to add a conditional 1st or maybe Bennett?
Murphy is probably worth a 1st, or Rittich (w/ extension), a 2nd and Kylington; under the current financial climate, I think teams will want even more for 1st rounders, so I imagine the latter is more likely.

I'd say a fair deal for Toews and Murphy would be:

to Cgy: Toews (20% retained/8.4m), Murphy
to Chi: Hanifin, Rittich (w/ extension), 2nd & Kylington

but that would not work under the Cap for Calgary, even if Ryan was added for Cap reasons.

I'd say the only way to make a Toews to Calgary trade is wait until after the expansion draft and see if Giordano, Tanev or Backlund are taken by Seattle.

2nd and a prospect is the same value as a 1st, so yes
