Draft Picks 2022-2023 Trade Dead line
Anderson is a good target for CGY, but there’s no way Treliving is paying that price to make the deal.

Hopefully CGY gets more than this. Treliving should be laser focused on 2023 1st round pick as part of the deal, not two years out.

I guess Treliving could let Valimaki and Mackey compete for the 3rd pairing spot before making the trade. If Valimaki shows up to camp and wins out, then you at least have a better idea on his value.
Meloche has more experience than both guys, and I think Zadorov will play on the right side.

2024 top 8 team
Boy….I don’t hate this Top 6 at all.
Happy for OTT fans to be coming out of the dark ages with this group. Dorion has done right by fans.
Now just beat CGY to a new arena. Won’t be hard.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>How is Strome an upgrade to Monahan? They are both big centers that don't use their body and are below average at skating. You talk about riding the season out but why not do that with Monahan instead? Then you have even more cap space open up</div></div>
I’m leaning this way now too — keeping Monahan seems like a worthwhile gamble to increase his value and provide more optionality with cap space next year.
A better target than Strome, who probably wants multiple years, would be Stastny. Could get him on a 1-year deal I think.
That said, if CGY keeps Monahan, you have to play him. And they should 100% be giving Pelletier and/or Phillips an opportunity to play with the big club this season. So there isn’t a ton of space for another signing without a trade.

Johnny Hockey is a traitor
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Strange how when a UFA exercises his rights to sign wherever is a traitor by the team that "loses" that player. But the same folks show no sympathy to the team losing free agents, such as Coleman, Tanev and Markstrom.

I couldn’t believe it when CGY got Tanev and Markstrom for no assets from VAN. Seems crazy, but that’s how UFA works.
Sucks for CGY to lose Gaudreau after the season the team had. It puts a serious wrench in the direction of the club for the next 3+ years.
And I will say this now: if CGY loses Tkachuk, it will hurt me as much as it will hurt Leafs fans if Matthews walks. Nothing stays the same forever.
I could’ve seen CGY competing again for years if Forsberg replaced Gaudreau in CGY. But that ship sailed.
Maybe JT Miller keeps the roster going for a bit?
Who knows. Realistically, a rebuild would be the smart long term move for CGY. But it’s a tough pill for fans to swallow right now.

CGY should probably save cap space for a young center instead. Plenty of wingers on the roster.

PHI can get quite a lot more for Konecny + Provorov if they traded them individually than that EDM offer. Keep in mind that EDM is a playoff team, so their 1st round picks aren’t top 10 picks.

Even if CGY removed the 2nd rounder, CGY would much prefer to have Mangi + Kylington over Tony D + Necas. Cheaper combined AAV for the next 2-3 years, plus Tony D probably isn’t a “fit” with CGY’s old school ownership/culture, even after an amazing season.

If Tkachuk doesnt want a long term contract and Gaudreau walks
The NJ deal is about fair value for Tkachuk if the Flames had no other option but to trade him. My hope/expectation is he extends long term in CGY, of course.
But also….CHI matches that Dach deal without hesitation. Why even try to propose that would work??

Would be fun to watch that first line in action together. I just think it’s tough to manage a full season together (and playoffs?) without a bit more size mixed in. Put a solid scoring winger with Gaudreau and Hughes and this lineup is better off for it. Bratt is going to do damage on the 2’d line.

Is this a possibility
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jah1722</b></div><div>Now talk about misinformation. Monahan isn’t a top 6 forward. And if a second hip surgery isn’t an injury issue then what is?</div></div>
Nah, you’re right. A 27 year old with 7 seasons straight of 20+ goals… averaging 26.5 goals per year even including two terrible injury seasons and 3rd/4th line minutes while hurt… who can score like clockwork playing with the highest skilled players… who has a career faceoff percentage above 50.5%… not a top 6 guy.
And his hips have both had surgery now and are better than they’ve been for years. He injured the 2nd hip playing through a bad 1st hip and putting way more strain on his good leg until it busted.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: “we’ll see”. Let’s revisit what value he fetches when he gets traded. I’m betting it’s above a coin flip that he nets assets to CGY. You can bet the other side.

This is more value from ANA than 97% of Capfriendly users would suggest. The average view is that Monahan is worth negative value.
I disagree and think CGY will get a mid pick for Monahan. That said, Dube is worth a 2nd. So maybe CGY considers this if it’s ANA’s 2nd + 5th?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>I would rather trade for 2 years of Dubois or Scheifele at the prices Nucks fans are going to ask</div></div>
I hear that. Dubois is very interesting given his age and potential for more development. Scheifele would probably be highly motivated if he got moved to take his game to new heights. I’d prefer him over Dubois if I had to pick one of those two.
I just think JT Miller is the perfect guy right now for the Sutter system with this Flames team makeup / age. And any deal would require an extension, which wouldn’t be cheap.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TampaBayLightning22</b></div><div>Detroit passes, You're not getting rid of Sean Monahan without at least attaching a 3rd round pick to him. He's coming back from double hip surgeries in consecutive years his value isn't that high right now.
And you're not getting Filip Forsberg any cheaper than the Matthew Tkachuk deal Forsberg will cost at least $9,500,000 x 7 years on the open market. He wants more than $8,000,000 per to remain in Nashville he's not taking less from Calgary.</div></div>
My sarcasm here is that Monahan is still a good player. He’s going to come back healthier and stronger than the past 2 years have shown. And a team that plays him in the Top 6 will increase his value substantially from today’s level.
+ “We shall see”: I don’t think CGY is going to add picks to “dump his cap”, in spite of Capfriendly popular opinion.
+ The Forsberg AAV comment could well be true. He could end up starting with a 9, but my hope here is that Team Sweden (aka Calgary Flames) is an interesting landing spot for him, assuming Johnny gets a bigger bag elsewhere.

Not a lot more, but definitely more.
This offer is the equivalent of: 1st + 1st (Zary) + 2nd (Dube) + 2nd (Valimaki) + 2nd
VAN gets 2 young players for the active roster, plus Connor Zary. A very young package, plus 2 extra picks. And for a guy who only has 1 year term left. I think it would be subject to Miller signing an extension with CGY, but this is a great package for where VAN is currently in their build for a playoff team.

That D core ain’t bad at all.
Overpay for Forsberg IMO. I think he’ll end up around $8-8.5M x 7 years. But that doesn’t change what you’re presenting here — just adds another $1-1.5M in cap space to this team. I’d certainly be interested in signing with CAR if I was Forsberg.

Finding out your core just like Detroit
Monahan is not dead. And not dead cap. Everyone thinks CGY will have to pay to move him, but that’s not the case. CGY isn’t doing this deal.
I’m also going to go out on a limb here and suggest there’s no chance Letang is signing a 2-year deal in BUF of all places. If he leaves PIT, it will be for a 4-year deal to a team that might make playoffs. BUF isn’t that destination yet.

If Johnny Stays
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>You didn't hurt my feelings. But I'm always amazed though that some many homer fans just can't imagine their own players leaving as UFAs, but think signing other teams UFAs are OK.</div></div>
We were discussing CGY trading Monahan / Dube and the valuation of those specific players. Not about the Gaudreau or Tkachuk situations, or any UFA/RFA for that matter.
But on that note:
Yes, there’s above a 0% chance that Gaudreau goes to UFA and finds a higher AAV than CGY offers and he signs elsewhere. But there’s also a high chance that he stays with CGY.
+ Yes there’s above a 0% chance that Tkachuk signs his QO for $9M x 1 year and then leaves CGY. But there’s also a high chance that he stays with CGY.
That’s how UFA/RFA works. Players earn the right to decide.
As someone who closely follows CGY, and based on the progress of these two players and the progress of the team, I think that it’s above 50% chance that they stay. And CGY can make the money work with 1-2 trades.
